Members Johnny-Boy Posted August 31, 2008 Members Posted August 31, 2008 Here's ASCAP's website: http://www.ascap.com/index.html Personally I don't see any benefit from joining either organization unless you have placements on TV, film, etc. These organizations collect & pay royalties to composers/ publishers for public performances of their work. I'm a member of ASCAP. A friend of mine is a BMI member. There's no way of knowing which one will benefit you most. ASCAP's quarterly statements are more detailed though; including the program/film your music was placed in, the episode/date of performance, what it was used for (background, theme, etc), number of plays, duration in mn/sec’s, etc… You’ll have to read all the info on ASCAP’s website, and then determine if there is any reason for you to join. When your music is published, the publisher will tell you to join ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC. Publishers usually register the music they plan on selling themselves. Best, John:cool:
Members BlueStrat Posted August 31, 2008 Members Posted August 31, 2008 Personally I don't see any benefit from joining either organization unless you have placements on TV, film, etc. The main benefit is that if someone does play your song in rotation or decide to use it for a commercial application you are easy to find. And if you can show that your song is being used without you getting paid for it, your PRO has a battery of lawyers whose job it is to make sure you get paid. I got a check from ASCAP for airplay I got in Norway. I didn't even know they were playing my CD there. But I got a check for myself as the writer and another one as the publisher. The other benefit is the 5% discount at MF and GC! Both ASCAP and BMI are about the same, though I've heard from different people that one may be more aggresive in collecting than the other. Which is which depends on whom you talk to.
Members MichaelFriedman Posted August 31, 2008 Author Members Posted August 31, 2008 Thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna go with ASCAP. For no particular reason other than it just sounds a little cooler.
