About 20 years ago, before Kramer Neptune, NJ closed it's doors, Kramer had an open to the public weekend sale. Friday was for dealers only and Saturday & Sunday were open to the public. Complete guitars; parts and cases were listed below factory costs.

I bought 3 complete guitars and about 6 or 7 bodies (painted Strat & Tele bodies for $35.00 each); necks; hardware and cases to make my own FrankenKramers.

I bought my Kramer Steve Ripley for $200.00:cool:

Nice to see Maverick has their Ripley for $5K.

Pretty dadgum neat guitar. I remember they came out when I was in the fifth grade and I never thought I'd be able to afford one. They were $1600 at the time in Houston. I used to drool over them, but was more interested in the Barettas and Jackson Soloists.

I'd be all over one for $200. Just for living out my childhood fantasy. I also used to REALLY want an 83 Ibanez RS1000 which I used to think was the best looking guitar ever... again, back when I was 10-12 years old and I lucked into one of those a couple years ago, so who knows.

Stereo-ability aside, what do you think of the Bartolini pickup?

Ah geez.

I put MONEY DOWN on a green one in 1987, I think I put a third down or

the like and not long after that I lost a job and had to give it up.

Frickety frack. I thought it was a really great idea for a guitar, I also had

the Roland GR GR-100 hex guitar too:

It was a cool system too but different, a more electronic synthy sounding

system but still cool.

But the idea of the Ripley, at least for me is, I wanted to live the fantasy

of having bass sounds on the E and A and distortion on everything else so

I could do a crazy power-duo thing with a drummer friend.

We did this thing (I might still have a recording) called "Tarantula" (oh boy)

that was just guitar and drums and it was me with my old Gibson L6-S into

a Electro-Harmonix guitar synth (an early one from around 1981).

Now, in retrospect my big guitar-lust for something like this is a Roland

GK3 pickup into a VG99, that can do the "guitar/bass at the same time

with synth pads" thing in spades.

$5000 for a Kramer Ripley! Unreal. I bet Steve Ripley would be amused,

I think he plays in a country band now.

Bbreaker: any chance of posting a clip of that thing in stereo panned?

Did yours come with a breakout box to divide each output to a

separate amp or is it just using a stereo cable?

Stereo cable.

what do all those knobs do?

The Ripley has a hex-output humbucker - that is, there is a separate output for each string. Those six knobs arranged in a diagonal are the pan knobs for each strings output - you can pan each string to any position in the stereo field.

So - has anyone ACTUALLY used one to record anything of interest or note?  Just asking.  Cool idea, but I have never said "Man - if I could JUST pan these strings differently...."

Not saying there are not applications.  Just may have never heard one!
