Members jemmus
Signal chain quiz for you guys. Know the Gang of Four song "Outside the Trains Don't Run on Time"? Where's that unique out of control guitar tone come from? Any guesses on what Andy Gill used to get it/how he got it?
Members bsman
Sounds really similar to the sort of tones Robert Quine and Ivan Julian were getting on The Voidoids several years earlier. I believe Julian played an LP and Quine a telecaster, both through Fender Amps. I would suspect that a tonescreamer or Big Muff is in there as well... Members jemmus
Side note-- one of Steve Howe's short leads on "Yours is No Disgrace" briefly gets that same metallic crashing tone.
Members Saturday
fender amp, or a hiwatt maybe?andy gill used a strat without a neck pickup. it's mostly in the picking technique i guess.
Members csm
IIRC, both Andy Gill and Dave Allen used Fender-style instruments made for them by a Leeds luthier -- Dave's was a P-style bass and Andy's a Strat-style 6-string with two PUs in the bridge and 'middle' positions, and Andy favoured SS amps (Carlsbro?) precisely because they were 'less expressive' than tube amps. (Interestingly, at that time, Wilko Johnson -- a major influence on AG -- favoured SS amps from the now long-defunct H/H brand.)
Members jemmus
The picking technique part makes sense. Think there were some effects used in getting that tone? Doesn't sound like your standard amp distortion.
