Members ILikeGuitar
I'm lookin for an older JV strat with the tinted neck, but I heard they had poplar bodies back in the day. How do they sound compared to the newer alder ones?
Members peavey_impact
My experience with Poplar body guitars is that they sound almost just like alder, with maybe a little deeper bass response.
Members bsman
I'll bet that if you had a poplar and alder guitar in a solid color you would not know the dif...
Members Mel Cooley
The poplar body one I had sounded decidedly more dead than my alder Tokai strat and dinged a lot easier too.

Two different guitars from two different makers, not exactly a terribly valid comparison, IMO... FYI, there are about 30 species called "alder" and 30 species called "poplar", so it's really almost impossible to make any broad, sweeping generalizations about such things... Members Vintage55
Not sure if you could tell the difference. If you find an older one, play it and like it, get it. It's not rocket science.
Members ILikeGuitar
Yeah I'm thinking about getting one. Those old ones have nice necks, they are tinted gloss with a harder V shape than the newer ones which are not tinted and a soft V. I actually had a Strat style Peavey Predator MIA which had a poplar body and it sounded OK I think before I took it apart. So the new ones might have better bodies but the old ones have better necks?
