So I am looking for a guitar to buy. I have been a good boy and saved, and now I am going to treat myself :)

I live in Dorset, and there aren't many good music shops around here. The biggest place I near to me is just full of Ibanez and Strats and I want a bit more variety.

Ebay seems like a good place, but because I am going to be dropping some good money (possible top end of

Forget Denmark St. Overpriced shops, rude and disinterested staff and, often, poorly maintained stock.
If you're only in Dorset you could do far worse than a trip to Manson's Guitar Shop here in Exeter. They have a great selection of Fender, Gibson, PRS, Ibanez etc., knowledgeable and friendly staff and will probably be approachable for a deal.
Project Music in Exeter also has a big stock of Fender. They're a main dealer and will price match if you've seen a guitar advertised cheaper. I know, I bought both my Telecasters there.

Holy crap. Another bloke in Dorset. That makes three! :D

Anyway... yeah, I'd go for Manson's as well. Maybe it's the inner Muse fanboy talking, but I checked out the site and it seems like a great place.

It is; and they have loads more stock than their website might suggest. It needs updating badly!

Wow. I always thought the stock on their website was good, so I'm even more excited about going there now (birthday trip next Feb, haha)

I'm taking my acoustic in to have it looked over (it has problems), and maybe test out a few amps if I can bring my electric too. I hope they have a Vox AC30 - I saw a demo of one on YouTube and it produced the tone of the angels :thu:

not from the South, but I'll put in a nother vote for Manson's, worth the trip if you're in the area.

I'd also stay WELL away from Denmark street, certainly for actually buying anything. You pay for the "name" there and although I haven't been since the late summer, the stock never actually seems that good and seems replicated between many of the shops.

Thanks for the responses guys.

@EJD - I didn't know there were other Dorset-ites(?) were on the forum either!

I never thought about going to Mansons actually. It isn't too far at all really.

The stock on the website is quite bad, is it really much better in the store? Do they have much second hand stock?

I'm after either a Jazzmaster, a Tele, an Electromatic Gretsch, the Yamaha TVL or just anything that feels right. I'm being quite open as I am looking for a guitar to enjoy and to get a great sound out of.

Also is there any where convenient to park near by? I am not too familiar with Exeter to be honest.

Denmark street is fine and interesting but these days if Im looking for a guitar I tend to use the internet to do my shopping. I know thats not ideal, in some ways, but I havent gone wrong yet and Ive managed to get some good deals.
In terms of the South of England about the biggest shop we've got in Bristol is Sound Control but theres nothing really special here....

Hartnolls in Plymouth is my 'Local' Shop For LOcal People' (I live on the edge of Dartmoor) and, though small, they have wall-fulls of Gibsons, Fenders, G&Ls and a few Gretsches and PRS....plus corners full of cheapie goodness.I get the feeling they could pretty much get anything you wanted.

Very friendly....(although I haven't been to their new Torquay branch yet)...and I got a super deal on the nearly new Fender Aerodyne Strat I proudly showed off a month or so back.

I know Plymouth must seem an age away from Dorset (It must be at least 60 Miles from Dorchester....but I remember working in Newfoundland where people would think nothing of driving a 400 mile round trip after work just to have a mosey around the nearest shopping mall!!

PS.....

If you go the other way, Nevada in Portsmouth look to have a large stock and I'm sure there are places in Southampton......GAK ( I Think) are in Brighton.

I have looked at shops in Denmark street and can't say I was truly excited.......plus....if they are anything like Londons premier violin dealers (with whom I have a LOT of experience!) they could be more snooty and overpriced than out of town shops....but this may be unfair.
