Members Huh? Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 You know what I am really craving? An FFT spectral analyzer that yields a really beautiful 3D WATERFALL/MOUNTAIN RANGE type display. Is this what you want.....it's free. http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/
Phil O'Keefe Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I have a ton of favorites too, so like Craig, I'll stick with what I've used recently - within the last day or two... Pro Tools HD Massenburg Design Works High Res EQ Sound Forge / CD Architect Har-Bal Eventide Anthology II Yamaha Studio Manager EMI / Abbey Road TG12413 compressor East West Fab Four - 'cause it really....sounds.....like...the....Beatles....inst ruments....and I CAN PLAY THEM. Sentimental? Oy yes....Revelatory?...O yes again....Nostalgic??....what ELSE do I have to live for at my advanced age?....Authentic?...hell yes, and I can make NEW music with them so STFU... I really only "need" ONE sound from that VI - the Baldwin Electric Harpsichord. I need "THAT SOUND" for a "faithful" cover I've had sitting half finished for ages... I d have a question or two I'd like to ask them, but I have not been able to find any way to contact them pre-sale, except for filling out a "ticket" on their website's support page.
Members UstadKhanAli Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 I bet you will!!:thu:I have PT8 and love it.I have the Masseys as well, in fact I want to go pay him for them so I get to save my settings. They are nice plugs aren't they? Yeah, I love them, and the price is so reasonable. For those who don't have them, don't let the low price fool you; you're getting a high-quality plug-in no matter what it is. I use the Tape Saturation plug-in. I forgot to mention this in the other thread that you began about recording tips, but I loooooooove using this on bass tracks. Dang, it sounds good. I also use the L2007 on the Master Buss for mixes that I don't send to a mastering engineer, including rough mixes, so the clients are happy that their rough mixes are louder without having to ruin the dynamics and sound quality of the mix. And I use the delay. Can't remember the name, but it has this really fantastic almost three-dimensional quality to it and just sounds great.
Members UstadKhanAli Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 Massenburg Design Works High Res EQ I just heard Phil use this very recently on acoustic guitar, and it sounded really CLEAR and...I don't know how to describe it exactly, but it sounded GOOD. I know that's not a good description, but it just works without sounding phasey, smeary, or distorted in any manner. CLEAR and GOOD. I'm sure someone else can describe it better than I just did, but suffice to say that this is going to be my next purchase.
Members DevilRaysFan Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 Is there a good Guitar VSTi available (not VST)? Ive been on a quest to find a VSTi that can simulate various guitars and strumming relatively realistically. Do you gurus know of one or can recommend one? If not, can you recommend a Guitar sample/WAV set in various keys thats available? Most Sampling CDs have phrases in a few keys and never the key I need (and detuning the sample usually screws with its timbres). I just need various generic electric and/or acoustic guitar strums in most keys that can be worked to fit most genres - any BPM

Members Anderton Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 You know what software has fallen off this list? Sound Forge. I felt that it was the most intuitive stereo wave editor imaginable, and now they seem to be competing with Sonar, ProTools, all the multitrack DAW's. Sonar is doing almost everything for me at this point, and I can't justify upgrading Sound Forge again -- especially since it seems to have lost focus.Maybe someone can clue me as to what Sound Forge still does best? Interesting, I'm just getting back into it now that version 10 is out. I'm still learning the new features, but the pitch/time-stretching has gone from some of the worst I've used to some of the best - they licensed the zPlane algorithms. You can drop pitch a semitone, and not be able to tell whether the dropped or non-dropped version is the original. It's really quite awesome if you need to do stretching. OTOH I hear you about Sonar. It's perfectly capable of doing mastering, as are many DAWs these days.
Members Anderton Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 I bet you will!!:thu:I have PT8 and love it. PT8 LE is a fine upgrade. I'm still bugged about the lack of path delay compensation and the envelope crossfades, but workflow is much better, and the new instruments rock. Very good job - even some competitors I've talked to think Digi got it right, and I agree.

Very good job - even some competitors I've talked to think Digi got it right, and I agree. I am glad to hear you say that....yes I am very happy. Unfortunately I am buried at work as we have just passed the 1/2 way point of a really almost chaotic production.I just have no energy left at the end of the day to go in the studio. Yes Ken I also have all of those and I got the free versions. http://www.masseyplugins.com/index_v2.html?page=download They are full working versions, you just cannot save the settings, everytime you close a session they default. I take snapshots and keep them in the session folder. The L2007 is the only stereo one and yes it is a nice Limiter. Do you have the free Bomb Factory suite for Pro Tools. I think you are on HD though so this might not work for you. I think the BF-76 is modeled after a UA/Urei 1176 Limiting Amplifier.http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=119&langid=100&itemid=4201 As a sidenote...I have perhaps $3000 or close to that of plug in's for Digidesign that I was able to get for very little money by working their specials. For example I spent the extra few hundred bucks and got the Factory version of my 002R when I got it and then later when I paid for PT upgrades I bought the slightly more expensive special versions that came with an extra plug or two. I mean it's like paying $90 instead of $49 or something, but getting almost $700 worth of plug in's. The MBox Mini comes with a very nice collection of stuff for $250... including the Joe Meek Bundle and the Bombfactory bundle which also has the BF-3A Leveling amplifier which is an awesome plug. I have had that for a while. It's a great deal actually if you can live with only 2 inputs...fine for laptop mixing etc. Sorry to go off on your thread Rasputin I just wanted to get that off my chest:p

Totally worth it. I am not on HD, actually. Phil is, but I purchased his old Digi002 controller and all that and am going to upgrade to PT8 soon, as you already know. I use the Digi002, but bypass its converters. I believe you are right about the BF-76 being modeled after the 1176, as the number and look of the plugin implies. I use it sometimes, but tend to use the Waves one more, for some reason. And speaking of BF, I also looooooooove the Tel-Ray Variable Delay. I don't know if most people like this or not, but it's so warbly and odd sounding that it sounds amazing on some vocals and other things as a special effect, and sometimes even if it's not a special effect, I'll use it in the back a little, and it adds this beautiful depth that I just love. This is definitely not for everyone.
Members Rabid Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 Windows PC: Sonar Producer (including Dimension Pro) Zebra If I was limited to one DAW and one VSTi that would be the pair. Sometimes I just want a laptop and nothing else. If I am not going to connect a sound card to the laptop then I want a Mac. For those times... Mac: Logic Studio Live Suite Made even better since I can install Dimension Pro and Zebra on my Mac.

With the Voce Spin it sounds like a Leslie coming in and out...... kinda Electric Ladyland sort of a vibe......kinda...... LOL!! Yeah the Tel-Ray is cool.
Members tremolounge Posted October 18, 2009 Members Posted October 18, 2009 We have a couple real (hardware) Tel-Ray "Organ Tone" echo units in the studio, and you guys are right; there's nothing like that sound. For non-Protools users, the Nomad Factory Oilcan Echo plugin is a good option: http://www.nomadfactory.com/products/bluetubes_v3/bt_plugins/index.html#09 Tel-Ray gallery: http://www.geocities.com/Tel_ray/gallery.html

Members Ernest Buckley Posted October 19, 2009 Members Posted October 19, 2009 Reason (Version 4 just rocks, if you`re bored with it, you`re boring ) Waves Renaissance Compressor IMO, one of the most powerful compressor plugs. It does everything from smooth compression to smashing Waves C4 Multiband Compressor It took me a while to understand how to use this plug because its not only a compressor, its an EQ. C4 is incredible for rounding out mixes. Waves L1 Maximizer Been slapping this plug across the stereo buss for 7 years. Simple but very powerful. DP6 Been using DP for 9 years now and its been able to handle whatever project I throw at it. DP7 looks like the sweetest update yet. [edit] I have to add one more... ReCycle Turning audio into a MIDI file is just wicked and too much fun.
Members scud133 Posted October 19, 2009 Members Posted October 19, 2009 Ableton and Garage Band i use other stuff more, but those are the only two that give me that sense of kind-in-a-candy-shop wonder and awe. they are just stupidly easy to use to make cool music quickly.
Members rasputin1963 Posted October 19, 2009 Author Members Posted October 19, 2009 Is this what you want.....it's free.http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/ I D/L'd this. It's highly specialized towards room calibration, not so intuitive to use. Maybe something more geared to the audio recordist, rather than the room designer, would fit the bill...
Members UstadKhanAli Posted October 19, 2009 Members Posted October 19, 2009 I bet you will!!:thu:I have PT8 and love it. Just successfully installed it. There's an AIR plug-in. Can't remember the exact name, but it's a "widener", a sort of stereo spatializer. Wow, that actually sounds quite good! Will go through some of the other plugins as well. I also installed the Nomad Producer Pack, which was $250 for a buttload of plugins from dontcrack. A lot of them are not my thing, but the Pulse-Tec EQ is pretty good, and the NE72 vintage EQ seems usable. Just started messing around with it, so I don't have a concrete opinion, but for $250, it seems really good, and the Pulse-Tec sounds quite nice. Anyway, I look forward to working with PT8. Looks soooo much better. Gonna have some stuff to learn and get used to in the coming weeks/months/whatever.
Members Huh? Posted October 19, 2009 Members Posted October 19, 2009 Ken....plug in compatibility is a HUGE deal with later versions of PT7 through PT8. Make sure these plugs are on the list http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=115&itemid=4767&action=news_details .....I don't know that manufacturer dontcrack, did you get it through Digidesign? Sounds 3rd party to me. Scope that out. Hopefully they play nice with PT. Massey is not on the list and they do okay so you might be fine.
Members tremolounge Posted October 19, 2009 Members Posted October 19, 2009 dontcrack.com is just an online store, and a good one -- delivery by download, good prices, and some good product lines (Sonalksis, PSP, Nomad Factory, etc.).
