Members jerry_picker
So, is the time signature changing back and forth each measure: 4/4 to 5/4 to 4/4 to 5/4... or is it just 9/4?

Members hecticone
Straight 4/4 just that the drummer is using the snare on one instead of a crash. Then coming back with a fill to bring it back in time. We are so programmed to hear the snare on 2 and 4 that when it pops in somewhere else it throws us off. Members Jkater
I'd call it 9/4.

Members mutant_guitar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBQPkLuwy80 I like this version too. if you watch zappa conduct the first measure in this one, he raises the baton high for the first beat, but doesn't on beat 4 or 5. that makes me think it's in 9/4. I think I saw the notes for this one, once, it went from 4/4 to 5/4 and back again.

Members Wulver
I've heard it called 9/4, yes, but as far as explaining it to band members 5/4 + 4/4 should do fine. thats' essentially what it is.

Members hecticone
Jerry if you knew how to count to eight you would have this figured out. Count 12345678 and keep doing it after 16 measures it will come back in with the crash on one. Its called jazz but a very slow version.

I hear downbeats at 1, 5, 10, 14, 19, 23, 28, 32, 37... If I count it in 4, I only need 8 measures to come around.

Members Kap'n
I don't count it. I just go by feel. Hasn't hurt me yet. Frank probably wrote it in 9, but half his band probably thought of it in alternating bars.
