So --

I'm visiting the folks for a belated xmas and I got an mxl-4000 mic (awesome). However, when I opened the box containing the mic, it seems like the inner components (diaphram/transducer) are rattling around inside the mic's housing. I'm assuming this is not normal ...

BUT

I'm afraid to try it out. I ordered through MF, but in general mics are not returnable ... but it seems like this one was DOA ... ?

Do you guys have experience w mic returns ... or a mic like this (w rattling)?

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

It definitely shouldn't rattle.

FWIW, I had a pair of MXL 993s that sounded great for a few months, and then for no reason at all, they started humming so bad that I couldn't use them anymore. It kind of soured me against their entire product line.

Your gut feeling is correct, a mic shouldn't have "parts rattling around" inside of it. You should be able to see the diaphragm - the lollipop looking thing - through the metal grille.

I'd try contacting MF by phone, explain the situation (shipping damage) and get the return authorized beforehand. Good luck.... :idk:

Yeah ... called MF -- they were reasonable. I'm exchanging it (they pay shipping) + free gift. So -- as long as it works, I'm all set!

As far as the MXL reviews go ... I heard some good things about this mic. The thing is ... I know what it is and what it isn't I think. I know its sort of a gimmick to look like the 'high-end' tube mics, but it is multi-pattern, and it is FET, and it is a large-diaphragm. By comparison, my only other mic is a senheisser e609 -- which is great for recording my cabs when loud, but sucks at acoustic (or classical) guitar. So -- even if this guy is not the best, I get to try out different polar patterns, with a mic that should have the sensitivity to record what I want. I don't have the ear as of yet to hear the differences, so its a good all around starter mic for me I think. That said .... if it works :thu:

If you're not sold on the MXL line look into Audio Technica's studio condensor mics. They have some in that price range and their stuff is always top notch. I have an AT-3035 and it is amazing, especially for acoustic. Those go for around $199 or less. I have a couple other AT mics. I can't speak for MXL, but AT's quality is well known.

I've got a pair of AT-2020s myself and have no complaints with them.

I also have an AKG C4000B that I love, and a CAD Trion 8000 Tube that is pretty nice as well.

Someday I do need to get another pair of small diaphram condensors though. I'm using the AT2020s for drum overheads and while they are great mics, they aren't the best for drum overheads.
