Anyone buying Windows 7 today?

I'm in need of a new box and am strongly considering being a guinea pig, though I'm a Sonar user and they claim Windows 7 compatibility (though who knows about my other software). Any early converters during the beta period? Anyone buying a box or upgrading today?

Sonar probably not the problem. It will be the drivers that support your audio hardware. I'm in the same boat. Thinking about upgrading but nervous that I have seen quite a few people reporting bad experiences on the Cakewalk forums. Audio in general seems to not yet be clean in terms of reliable execution. Until that settles down, I'm not going to budge.

You might consider going into the Sonar forum and posting a question about your specific proposed audio gear. See if anyone else has had success (or failure).

I got an early start installing Win 7 Pro using a business license and Microsoft download. No problems so far other than Win 7 Business will not upgrade Vista Ultimate or Vista Home. That means I have to reinstall all the programs. This happened on all three computers I have upgraded this week.

On the good side, it installs as a dual boot so I can go back and forth between Vista and Win 7 until I get everything lined out. I have not tried installing drivers for my external audio interface. Surprisingly, Ableton Live will now run decently on my office desktop and my HP notebook using motherboard sound devices. This is a pleasant surprise as I can now sit outside with my notebook and compose. I could never get ASI4All to work on my HP Notebook with Vista Home 64 and never wanted to sit outside with a notebook AND an external audio interface. :thu:

After bypassing Vista, a couple of more months won't hurt me. I'm in no rush since everythings still working great with XP here. I'll coincide it with a new PC build so I can keep my current machine the way it is and tinker with Win 7 until I feel I'm ready to switch over.

First rule of production: Never use an OS until it's been out at least a year.

Let some other sucker be the unpaid beta tester; wait until all your programs, plugins and utilities WORK reliably.

....unless you like to waste your days bashing your head into the wall....

Yup I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro 64bit yesterday. So far all my software works 100% including Cubase 5.1, Komplete 6, Revalver MKIII, Overloud TH1 and the Peterson Strobosoft. No hardware issues either except for my VG99 but thats a 64 bit issue and not a Win 7 issue. I did manage to get the VG99 working in the end though :thu:

I'll upgrade once my Windows 7 Release Candidate version gets close to timing out :) Might as well enjoy the free ride while it lasts!

Actually Windows Vista was the beta (alpha?) version of Windows 7! :)

If you have Vista and running OK theres no big reason to upgrade. The systems are basically the same except all the bloated crap vista had isnt there. The driver issues because Manufactures dragging their feet into vista isnt going to be a big issue either. The Uprgrade would be best for XP users. From what I hear, The XP drivers and Vista drivers will work with win 7 so its should be a fairly painless upgrade. The only problem I see is the cost. This bull{censored} of having to shell out $120~220 for an upgrade every few years is getting old fast.

For recording, You must always watch out for SAS. (Software Acqusition Syndrome) If you have no Driver issues, Everything works good, The systems productive, and you dont need to upgrade, the money can better be spent elseware.

One thing to keep in mind. The install is a complete install. It wont just upgrade XP. You need to backup your entire system and reload everything from scratch. For me thats at least 24 hours or more of hard work and another month or so to get everything tweaked into shape.

I've been running the Win 7 RC, since it came out and now running

Win 7 Ultimate since I qualified to hold a Win 7 launch Party.

Had the party yesterday (also my 56th birthday) and it was a hoot!

Good time had by all.

Obligation fulfilled.

The free ride continues......

How are you gonna figure out whether all your apps and gear work without using the OS?

Everybody has different combinations of hardware and software so you'll never know for sure that everything will work together properly. Unless you know of a specific incompatibility problem you'll have, there doesn't seem to be a great benefit in waiting.

Windows 7 has been in the wild for months already. Whatever gear/apps you have, chances are the user community has had a crack at Windows 7 and know whether it works or not, and whether the manufacturers will be supporting the OS now or in the future.

People that are 100% content with their current setup shouldn't change. But if you are going to get Windows 7 at some point then waiting just for the sake of waiting seems a bit pointless.

I heard that Windows 7 can install as a dual boot, and there's a virtual version of XP included for those who need to run older software that's not W7 compatible. True? False?

Both are true. Virtual XP is is not available in the home versions though afaik.

The RC copy of Windows 7 that I tried had a very limited version of "virtual XP". I couldn't adjust the resolution and fonts so it was difficult to read at best....PLUS it is another separate task! In essence, you will have 2 OS up on your computer at once..Win 7 and XP chewing up your memory and speed.
