Members golias Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 I see that both: Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Flaming Lips)&Welcome Interstate Managers (Fountains of Wayne) are well represented here, which tells me you people have damn good taste. A lot of other stuff I loved has already been listed, but here are a few good ones nobody has brought up yet: Fire (Electric Six)Weird Revolution (Butthole Surfers)Release The Stars (Rufus Wainwright)Who Killed Amanda Palmer? (Amanda Palmer)Oh No (OK Go)Speak For Yourself (Imogen Heap)Comfort Eagle (Cake)You'll Rebel To Anything (Mindless Self Indulgence)We Starting Nothing (The Ting Tings) Also, while "Elephant" seems to be the White Stripes album everybody is putting on their list, I think the albums "De Stijl" and "Get Behind Me Satan" are both every bit as good, if not slightly better. If I was making a "top 20" albums list, or even a "top 50" for the decade, I don't think any of the 21st Century U2 albums would make the cut for me. Their often-hated-on 1990s works were generally better albums than what they've done since, if you ask me.

One of my favorite lyrics of all time: You realize that life goes fastIt's hard to make the good things lastYou realize the sun doesn't go downIt's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Members paulisme Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 I'm surprised to not see Amy Winehouse's Back to Black album on anyone else's list. I have to say that's my favorite of the decade. I'm a huge fan of deeply personal albums; when I think of my favorites, it's Plastic Ono Band, Blood on the Tracks, Pinkerton, and now Back to Black.

Members A Happy Crowd Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 Here's a rough list (in alphabetical order) after taking a quick look through my cds. It's heavily skewed toward the first half of the decade. It feels like I spent the second half paying less attention to new music and, instead, trying to catch up on older stuff. Belle & Sebastian - Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant (2000)Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certan Damaged Lemons (2000)Blonde Redhead - Misery is a Butterfly (2004)Dizzee Rascal - Boy in da Corner (2004)Dungen - Ta Det Lugnt (2004)Enon - High Society (2002) Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight (2008)Katiejane Garside - Lalleshwari/Lullabies in a Glass Wilderness (2005)Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennae to Heaven! (2000)Jolie Holland - Catalpa (2003)Liars - They Were Wrong So We Drowned (2004)Meanwhile, Back in Comminust Russia... - Indian Ink (2001)Mogwai - Happy Songs for Happy People (2003)Pedro the Lion - Winners Never Quit (2000)Pedro the Lion - Control (2002)Portishead - Third (2008)Radiohead - Kid A (2000)Radiohead - Amnesiac (2001)Seely - Winter Birds (2000)A Silver Mt Zion - Horses in the Sky (2005)
Members trollin' Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 It feels like I spent the second half paying less attention to new music and, instead, trying to catch up on older stuff. Same in my case too. I think that's because I realized that the musicians in the 60's, 70's and 90's put a lot more work into their music & the music of today totally sucks ass for the most part. Two Radiohead albums and Dizzie Rascal I hate Radiohead with a passion (see: overrated) but that's an interesting bit of diversity within your list
Members docjeffrey Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 I don't like Mastodon's vocals (I'm a picky bugger) You can buy Crack the Skye in a two disc set--Disc 2 is the entire album without vocals. So, you, my friend, have no excuse for not liking Mastadon! Mastadon has a great singer, though. My votes go to the following: Tool: 10,000 DaysMastadon: Crack the SkyeMachine Head: The BlackeningPat Metheney Group: The Way UpPorcupine Tree: The IncidentSteve Earle: Townes [Van Zandt]ZZ Top: MescaleroTori Amos: American Doll PosseRush: Snakes and ArrowsJohnny Cash: Cash IVThe Fray: The Fray (2)Isis: Wavering RadiantGary Moore: Live at Monsters of RockBB King: AnthologyAlison Kraus: A Hundred Miles or MoreBrian Setzer: Red Hot and Live

Members Alex_SF Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 Man, I must be turning into the out-of-touch old uncool dude, because I'm just not feeling a lot of what's been posted so far. Just so much of what came out this past decade in the rock genre left me cold, even if there were some good moments here and there. The only other recent album I thought of that I liked most of the way through was Tell 'Em What Your Name Is by Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears -- and even that was kinda derivative of old Andre Williams, though done well. And pigs flew when I found myself agreeing with Spin magazine recently on the decline of Radiohead, whose 90s output had been some of the best of that decade. Now get off my lawn.
Members trollin' Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 I like some of your list I've seen Mastadon twice. Either they were really fuggin' drunk both times or else they don't know how to play a live show to save their lives. I didn't really like them before I saw them, but since I've seen them, I can say I don't respect their (lack of) abilities either. I'd rather see Greg Kihn again than Asstadon Alex_SF: I feel you on the last decade of rock. There were a couple good bands and albums, but aside from that....hardly any quality work.

Hardly any quality work? Did I read that right? The 2000's have been chalk full of great artists. I don't really listen to rock music, but the indie scene has never been better in terms of quality and originality. I don't understand why people can listen the same boring 70's/80's blues-rock all their lives and then complain about what's out today. Dig deeper than the radio stations. I can't stand mainstream rock, but The Mooney Suzuki bring back the 60's vibe of rock 'n' roll and they are the only recent rock band I like. What I love about this past decade's music was how far every artist pushed the limit. Lady Gaga brought originality back into pop music, she made it ok to be different in that genre. Before her, every song on the top 40 sounded just like the last. Mogwai really pushed the post-rock genre into a new limit and went against the over done three chord progression song. Everybody is seeing how far they can expand a genre and experimenting, just like they did in the 60's/70's, it's just not as mainstream as it was back then. You can listen to whatever you want, but don't diss the 2000's just because you only heard the crappy 5% of it that floods the radio.
Members HeatherAnnePeel Posted January 3, 2010 Author Members Posted January 3, 2010 I must also add: "American III: A Solitary Man" (2000) - Johnny Cash"Binaural" (2000) - Pearl Jam"Riot Act" (2002) - Pearl Jam"Devils And Dust" (2005) - Bruce Springsteen
Members HeatherAnnePeel Posted January 3, 2010 Author Members Posted January 3, 2010 You actually like new Pearl Jam? Your musical tastes are very mild and mainstream rock fan-boy status. You'd love Californian radio stations (which I personally can't stand) I saw someone mention MSI Same in my case too. I think that's because I realized that the musicians in the 60's, 70's and 90's put a lot more work into their music & the music of today totally sucks ass for the most part. Members rock-lobster Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 i'm surprised you chose pearl jam and binaural. i would call riot act and backspacer the better two of their 2000s albums.
Members CanIBDom Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 I haven't liked a Pearl Jam record since Yield, but I really enjoyed their Italian tour dvd.
Members HeatherAnnePeel Posted January 3, 2010 Author Members Posted January 3, 2010 Everyone has their own preferences. I'm surprised you care what mine are.
Members Fuelish Posted January 3, 2010 Members Posted January 3, 2010 Very much agree with these two. Magic is good, too, just didn't grab me as immediately as his others did. Here's my top 5, in no particular order: *) Love and Theft - Bob Dylan *) Real Gone - Tom Waits *) The Seeger Sessions - Bruce Springsteen *) Modern Times - Bob Dylan *) Orphans; Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards - Tom Waits Tom Waits is brilliant .... from any decade 5 solid choices there, 32-20 I ain't quite sure what the "uh-ohs" pertains to, so I have no list
