Best Budget Pickup??

What is the best budget pickup you have ever tried and what would you recommend for David Gilmour meets Eddie Van Halen meets Adam Dutkiewicz? I play alot of classic/hard rock as well as thrash, up to modern metal. So the pickup needs to be versatile. Almost forgot, I'm looking for humbuckers. Looking for bridge/neck suggestions.

By budget I mean under $50 each. Brands such as guitarhead, guitarfetish, dragonfire, tonerider, etc...

Thanks

I'm also willing to go Duncan/Dimarzio. What pickup set would you suggest?

Well, other than generally covering them all, what is the primary sound you are after? I mean, do you want it to chug for the chugga chugga stuff or do you want it to be open sounding for Zep kinda stuff?

I like the Duncan Custom 5 and I think I had it in about 5 different guitars. Always sounded great. I'd call it a balanced pickup or slightly favoring the top end.

If you are looking for something thicker, the Tone Zone is pretty good but might lean towards mud in a solid mahogany LP. In an alder or basswood guitar, it's one of the best. Splits pretty well too.

For a neck pickup from Dimarzio, I'd lean towards a PAF Pro or a PAF Joe for something that semi balances with the Tone Zone in the bridge.

The JB isn't my favorite pickup, but it has a big following. It comes into it's own more at stage levels in my opinion. The JB/Jazz, both splittable is a very versatile setup. Maybe the Custom 5/Jazz might be worth looking into, but I'd lean towards the Dimarzios and they are easy to find used.

From GFS, I haven't been overwhelmingly happy with their HBs though I will say I love the Alnico IIs. They are pretty low output though and likely not what you are looking for, at least not in the bridge position. If I were to order from them, I'd like go with the VEH in the bridge and an Alnico II in the neck, both splittable.

Guitar is all mahogany body/neck with rosewood fretboard. I'm a very "open" player. I do play some chugga chugga stuff but I also play zeppelin type music. I'd say nowadays I mostly play classic rock/hard rock with an occasional venture into thrash and modern metal.

Most people have recommend the JB/59 setup as well as a Custom Custom/59 setup. I'm just looking for more options.

My amp is a Crate Palomino V50 great clean channel but not so great overdrive. I don't use many effects but I own the Dano CO-1 Drive, Barber Dirty Bomb, and the Catalinbread WIIO. With EMG's the Dano and WIIO don't sound good at all except for on really low gain settings. With the Dirty Bomb it sounds decent at high gain but very sterile and undefined. I'd like to get some pickups that would allow me to put good use to my dirt pedals.

just purchased Dimarzio Area 61 and an Area 58 for a more vintage Strat tone. Heard them on several other guitars and I like the way they sound. Have been using Dimarzio HS3s ($54.95 new) in the bridge position and YJM for middle and neck pickups (or HS4s as they're now known) and they sound nice and glassy at times. The HS3 is a decent pickup when distortion is used as the sustain is very good but for the music I'm playing I need something that's more "Stratty" sounding hence the pickup changes.

I think I'd lean towards the Custom 5 over the Tone Zone in an all mahogany guitar. They are pretty dissimilar pickups, but I've had each in a variety of guitars and know they pretty well. I've also had I think three JBs... but two of them were a while back and the recent one was an ash strat. Never was crazy about the tone in a reasonably small room. I had the Parker JB knockoff (the stock pickups in most Parkers are JB/Jazz and they put a cheaper version of the same combo in many of their import guitar) in a P42 and it sounded great through a Tobelab going into the FX return of a Peavey Prowler. One of my favorite metal tones ever.

I like the SH-5. Maybe your right. A sh-5 and jazz may work good. I'll look into them more.

I also like Iron gear. I was thinking maybe a Hot Slag Bridge with a Rolling Mill neck? Any thoughts on this combo?

Also is the JB black?

I've looked into tonerider but can't figure out which to get. The rocksong?

Yeah the JB has double black bobbins. I did take the 'Seymour Duncan' logo off of the bobbin though.

I have a Generator and really like it. It sounds great in a Les Paul. I haven't had a Rocksong but I have an Alnico IV and it sounds good too.

I been thinking about alot of different choices and I have no idea what I should go for.

Here are my current ideas. Any input on them would be great.

Also all will be installed for split coil

IronGear:

Hot Slag/Rolling Mill

Dimarzio:

Super Distortion/PAF Pro or Air Norton

Duncan:

SH-5/Jazz or 59'

JB/Jazz or 59'

SH-11/Jazz or 59'

Tonerider:

Unsure

Also not sure about GFS at the moment.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend Iron Gear; i've used the jailhouse rails and have a Platinum 90 in my melody maker. Whilst ive no experience with the models you're looking at, the ones ive tried have been spectacular sounding for their specific job, irrespective of price.
