Members Railfanespee
I was in a pawnshop one day and I took a look at their guitar selection. Among others, they had a Squier Standard Strat (recent, MIC, average condition) for $200, and what I later learned to be a mid-80s MIJ Charvel Model 1 for $70.Guess which one I walked out with? Members Aahzz
Nope. Must be a different guy. I'm thinking of the guy that sold a large piece of property fin NYC after 9/11 and gave the proceeds to several charities and who built me my amazing Mosrite and also let me record in his studio for free when I was a kid.Must be a different guy. That was extremely generous of him. That might offset 1% or so of his negative karma....maybe.... And yes, I've had personal dealings with Ed, when I was a n00b. Members bloolight
I've always assumed that two things would kill off the entire pawn-shop/guitar connection once and for all: a.) The growth of eBay and Craigslist b.) The massive surge in decent, cheap, new guitars for beginners that can be found in music stores. The fact that pawn shops are still slapping ludicrous price tags on junk instruments either means that they are moronic sleazeballs or people still buy the damn things. Probably a little bit of both...
Members TheSkyIsCrying
Here in my county in GA if you pawn anything you have to sign that you own it, give them all you're info and a thumb print. You even have to do this if you trade a guitar in at a music store. This info is the given ti the local police.

Members scaryfried
Went to cash converters, saw an LTD viper sitting behind the desk and asked how much it was. "It's $300 (more than the RRP), but it's worth about $2000. We've marked it down from $1000." New they're like $250, it was the lowest model. They must have got their pricing from looking at ESP's, haha...
Members Cliff Fiscal
If it makes you feel any better I bought an MIA Fender Jazz V bass there for the price of a MIM Jazz.....they didn't know what they had. I also got a steal of a deal on a Spector bass, when they were running a 25% off for the holidays. So it works both ways.

Dude, seriously, do you have a quota for Ed Roman nuthugging? every thread i've seen you in lately has at least 2 Ed Roman references. I mean, he may be nice to you but please, if you like him so much quit hugging those nuts so tight, the man may wish to have little baby trolls one of these days. now......back to the thread. I love the sound of that Prince guitar, though I am thrown off by the headstock. You can't trust pawnshops for as far as you can throw them. I walked into one downtown toronto, they had a beaten to {censored} blue strat on the wall. it was $850. U.S. made, so I asked what was up with it. the guy explained that they just got it in, but the neck was bowed and the truss rod was broken, that's why it was going for so cheap. So I explained that a new standard U.S. strat goes for about 999 here in canada and with the amount of repairs that needed to be done to the guitar, even if the neck was fixable that I would give him 400 for it. needless to say, he wasn't happy. Members in_rainbows
Yeah there is a pawn shop right next to one of the music shops that I go to regularly that has the worst prices ever. I stop by every now and then and all I see are cheapo Strat and LP copies by no name Chinese companies and they're asking $300+. Their battered old beat to {censored} hard cases start at around $70, amps start at $200 for {censored}ty SS practice amps. I have no idea how they manage to stay in business. Members docjeffrey
I went to one of the local Pawn America today . I look and there a Hohner Tele ( Prince) guitar I ask the girl if its mispriced and she says no it $1999.99 .I asked again if they didn't accidently put a extra 9 on the price and she says I can talk to the Manager if I'ld like I say NO. Another clerk that I know better comes over and I tell both that the guitar isn't worth even the $199 .The guy tell me one just sold on Ebay for well over their asking price. This is the same place that had the Asian Knockoff Gibson Custom LP ,I feel like telling them to get their head out of their ASS but Know it'll do no good and walk out. Imagine that! From people who give crack whores $12 for their $3000 wedding rings no less.
Members Marshredder
If its a completely original, Pre-lawsuit (has the tele headstock) one then yeah, it can fetch $1500+, but thats only because prince uses one, and they only really fetched that just after the superbowl. But yeah, the huge pawn shop in Brighton has an electric guitarsection with 80's squiers and epiphones for
Members thestratomaster
If it makes you feel any better I bought an MIA Fender Jazz V bass there for the price of a MIM Jazz.....they didn't know what they had. I also got a steal of a deal on a Spector bass, when they were running a 25% off for the holidays. So it works both ways. I once went into a pawn shop that had a black/silverburst Strat Plus. Tag said $350. Unfortunately I didn't know as much at the time as I do now(would've bought that on the spot today). Went home did some research, went back the next day. Guy bumped the price up to $650. He saw someone showing interest in it and he went Hot damn, I can get more money out of some sucker. He denied the price change
Members axegrinder
I have concluded that my local pawns are more stupid than sleazy. For years I have seen the same 10 guitars hanging in one shop near my office marked with stupid high prices. A few cycle in and out but I figure those same turds are hanging there year after year because they overpaid for them and refuse to take a loss. FWIW I seem to hear the best pawnshop stories from Florida.
Members DarkHorizon
Its the same in the UK. They seem to charge the highest price they can find on the internet and then some. The fact they have no clue about what they are selling and off no after sales service doesn't seem to bother them.
Members zenbu
the key to my pawn shop success has been to go often...twice or three times a week, not hard since there are only a couple in the downtown area, but {censored} comes and goes all the time so luck plays a big part in my purchases. 99% of the time theres nothing I want...{censored}ty stuff or way over priced...but that 1% keeps me going back, and I`ve been extremely lucky. One place is staffed by kids who set their prices straight off the web but fortunately the turnover is common at that place so I just wait em out or buy when stuff goes on sale after it`s been hanging around for ages and they finally catch on to the fact that it was too high to begin with. Not quite as sophisticated here as say, Tokyo.
Members fullmetalguitar
I went into a local pawnshop several months ago thinking I might see some cool stuff at decent prices. Wrong. They had mostly new guitars and accessories, but it was all bottom end, no-name {censored} guitars that were over priced. Some crap brand I've never seen before and they wanted more than what you'd pay for a bottom end Squire from Guitar Center. And they had a bunch of them! Members harold heckuba
I sold a Hohner Prinz on ebay several years ago for over $3000. It was mint shape and had the Tele shaped headstock. Super nice guitar.
Members Mr_GoodBomb
Similar incident at the pawn shop back home. They had two guitars, a Roland Synth guitar with case and pedalboard and a Guilt X model (bullseye paint job, crazy body style, neck-thru, floyd rose) for literally years. Despite people denting and dropping the guitars, chipping them because of the crazy body styles, breaking tune floyds/kahlers, never having strings replaced, rusting, and the pedalboard for the Roland breaking a control pedal off every few months, they never lowered the prices, which were around a grand or more each. Could also be why they shut down with those same guitars in stock. The same place wanted the same price as Musician's Friend for heavily used Ibanez Rumor bass (which they gave my friend I think 50 bucks for) and an Ibanez RG with almost every movable piece of the Floyd bridge and nut broken or pitted off. They also had a back room full of used porn magazines and videos people had sold to them.
Members DarkHorseJ27
At the local pawn shop they have a guitar they are trying to sell for $800. I like the guitar, but its used value is $300, and I'd be willing to pay $400 because its nicer sounding tone than the rest of its model. I go in every week and offer them $400 for it. I've been doing this for over a year. And they still complain they can't get rid of it.

Most are pretty insane with there prices. 1-2 are quiet reasonable, but when they get a hot item "hot" as in like a Gibson or a Fender USA or even MIM. They shoot there prices up quite a bit. Though honestly still reasonable than most in my city. The ones I hit on a regular basis are the ones that actually like to "move" there shit and get more stuff in. The one in town here has a Ibanez RG 550 from the 80's in neon/bright orange. Though a nice "vintage" 80's guitar. The neck cavity has some cracks. The edge/floyd rose tremolo is rusty and ect ect. Typical pawn shop condition. The "regular" price on it is $899... but yesterday when I went there, they had it on sale for $700. *scrambles for wallet to pick up that score*. In the real world I could see it going for a solid $450. Being an original 550 from the 80's maybe could catch $500. But eh.. typical pawn shop prices on guitars, amplifiers and effects. No price honestly surprises me anymore. I just politely ask the price, try and bargain. If they don't budge... *puts guitar back on rack and says "Thank you very much"* and I walk out the door laughing as it closes behind me.
