Help - just had my strat refinished

I've just had my strat refinished by a tech and the poly clear coat has 4 or 5 tiny craters in it. I think they are called "fisheyes".

Again it's a two pack poly finish.

It's a shame as the guitar actually came up nice aside from these marks. It's beautiful with a glass like shine.

What did he do wrong?

Am I right in assuming to fix it, the body will have to be resanded and resprayed with clear coat?

What should I ensure gets done next time so as this won't reoccur? Do I get them to add "fisheye eliminator" to the paint?

I think it's in the clear itself - not the finish under the clear. It looks to me like the new clear coat had a bubble in it that burst as it dried. There are about 3 on the top of the body and 2 or 3 on the bottom.

It get's worse, I just noticed a "lump" in the finish that wasn't there before, it looks like the clear went on thicker in one spot than the rest of the body.

I am not impressed. I rang the guy but he doesn't give a {censored}... However I decided it's not worth chasing, I've got too much other stuff going on now... I've got to find a new job as I've just been laid off.

I'll leave it until next time I get the guitar setup and have a (hopefully) more experienced luthier fix these issues.

For now I just need to know what to tell the new luthier and understand what he can do to remedy the situation.

My girl friend bought over her camera but the little craters are so small they don't come out in the shot.

Fisheye is caused by a contaminant, quite often its silicone bleeding up from the piece being finished. You can use a fisheye remover in the finish, but it will ruin a gun. Much like how silicone leaches forever, fisheye remover does the same and contaminates equipment.

The guy did a {censored} job.

Any finsh needs to be sanded smooth and then buffed out. Sanding will get rid of the fish eyes and the uneven lumps you feel.

Usually it's wet sanded smooth with 2000 to 4000 grit and then buffed out to a deep, mirror, shine.
