Members GAS Man
Well, it's like you say "as A guitar player" therefore it's John Entwistle. His bass playing created so many of the melody lines on their classic hits much like a guitar player. Hate to say it, but I'm damn near oblivious to all other bass players except maybe Flea and Les Claypool
Members n'V'us
too many to list but one that stands out for me till this day is Gary Thain from Uriah Heep. I love the way he made the basslines as melodic elements of a song rather than just part of the rythm section.

And an enthusiastic +1 for Graham Maby, one of the best.

Members cratz2
Victor Wooten is the first to spring to mind.I always liked Steve Harris from Iron Maiden as well... He sort of walks the line of standard 'plod plod plod' bassist which is generally what I like from a hard rock bassist, but can also through in some more adventuresome stuff.I think I'd be the Steve Harris of rock bassists. Members sk8centilli
Michael Anthony Really? Are you sure about that? I always thought of Michael Anthony as one of the luckiest people in the business. A likable guy with average skills who hooked up with some amazing talent. Kinda like he woke up from a black out and found himself playing arenas.

I thought that too until I heard the Chickenfoot CD: he really plays some gorgeous, fat-toned lines against Chad Smith's drums. Methinks Michael Anthony was keeping it really simple all those years because Eddie Van Halen is such a busy guitar player, which speaks volumes about the guy's taste.
