Members Mahumadi
Hey guys, ive mgot a question about a guitar I came across. I attatched a pic for reference, hoping it shows up. im told its a late 60's guitar.. looks to be a jazzmaster. the thing is it seems like there is a 3rd pickup and the knobs are in a different location, also the headstock is black and the pickguard is over sized. Im looking for any information that can be obtained from the blurry photo. what do you guys think it is? Is it a jazzmaster? Reissue? original? THANKS!! Members benricci
Well, it's clearly not a Jazzmaster. It's some random 60's Japanese import. There were too many brands to keep track of, and most were not very good.
Members tiltsta
I'd bet money that the guitar in the picture isn't a real fender. Looks to be a late 60s import (likely from Japan) that is 'inspired' by a jazzmaster shape. EDIT: 30 seconds too slow.
Members crowguitar
To be honest it looks like a copy, but there are some pre-60's prototypes of the Jazzmaster that were pretty odd. Check out this site and see if any of these pertain to what you have there. http://www.jimshine.com/jazzmaster/intricacies_of_the_fender_jazzma.htm
Members Mahumadi
thanks for the replys. i found thisd bad boy for 150 bucks on CL, was hoping it was an original 60's fender. im going to check it out tomorrow, so well see how she plays. a japanese copy seems like the general census. any other ideas or opinions are still appreciated, thanks guys! Members bsman
Perhaps you could post a smaller, lower-resolution, fuzzier picture???? :poke:
Members ballhawk
I had an old Kingston guitar that looked like that. They were sold through a catalog and were not high end guitars. If that picture was bigger we could give a better answer.
Members Mister Crow
That photo looks familiar. Did this pop up in the New York area CL? Anyway, it's not Fender. And I wouldn't pay $150 for it, but I'm not a fan of those 60's-early70's Japanese guitars. They always look cool, but are almost unplayable, at least the ones I've run into. Members volvo1800
That looks a lot like the Hound Dog Taylor guitar. . . those things have a good sound to them and can command high dolla bills, even though they are Japanese imports. Members volvo1800
If there is metal around the tuners like this. Then its worth over 150 significantly.
Members Mister Crow
If there is metal around the tuners like this. Then its worth over 150 significantly. I'm not seeing the plastic switches on the top of the pickguard, and it looks like different neck inlays, on the OP's. Maybe it's a lesser version than HDT's, or a later version where they reduced the features?
Members Mahumadi
Unfortunately I cant post a clearer image, the only one I have from the seller is the one posted. perhaps I can ask for more and if given to me, ill post. Thanks again for the replies. Any others are encouraged to guess as to what this may be. The winning guess will get a healthy pat on the back, haha. Members Mahumadi
Hmm.. I cant find much info on a Jansen Jazzman, but ill keep searching. Any way to check for authenticity through markings or whatever else, aside from disassembly?

Members echale3
El-Cheapo 40 year old Japanese import.... My first guitar was very similar--it had the same offset body, the same bridge setup, etc., but only two pickups. The neck lacked a truss rod and the body was plywood. The pickups were turned off or on by a pair of rocker switches, 1V/1T, and it sported a purple/yellow 'burst with a silver plastic PG. The name on the headstock was Zen On, and it was a cheap Japanese import made in the late '60s, maybe even up into the early '70s.
Members Mahumadi
The seller has just told me that there are no markings on the headstock or anything. The only markings are on the silver plate, and they have the words Japan and an H.
