Found a set of Texas Specials for $100

Not a ripoff, but not a spectacular deal either. It's about the going rate.

My Texas Specials were $190 and came with a Japanese Fender.

 

But $100 is a solid deal. I got my H/S/S Tex Mex wired pickguard for $60 shipped I think and I slightly prefer the Tex Mex set over the Texas Specials, but I tend not to play single coils with much gain and both of those sets are more aimed at guys that play with gain. Not terrible with cleans, but there are several sets of $60 GFS sets that are quite a bit better - in my opinion - when played clean.

I like the Texas Specials. No clue as to what they cost as they came in a couple guitars I have.

I have a set that came in a used / upgraded 50s Classic. Are these considered good for getting a classic Fender tone?

I'd say they aren't very classic sounding, but they are pretty good sounding. Not quite as bright or thin as most vintage Fenders and not as vintage sounding as the 54s, Fat 50s, 57/62s or 69s.

 

The Texas Specials are more about capturing that SRV tone. They can certainly do other things, but that is most definitely what they are about.

That price as long as the guy who's selling them is reputable. I pay higher rates for things in exchange for security.

I'd get them, they're great pickups. I've got them in my strat. The clean tone is pretty good. But the overdrive is where they really set themselves apart, great tone.
