Members toadface
hi guys, i have several guitars from the early 80s (ibanez rs1010sl, ibanez sb-70,and a hagstrom swede). the problem is they all lack real definition/responsivness(amps btw are a Marshall mg100 and a rat mod'ed BH little giant head). they may all just be duds and they arn't all set up to the best but they could be worse(no awfull fretwear, buzzing etc.) but they seem to be pretty lifeles all over the board. yet i played my sister's NEW epiphone lp on both of them and that works a treat. my question is wether there is fundimentally something that breaks down in wiring/solder or posibly pots(even though they are'nt crackly when turned or hummy) would having them rewired get rid of this problem in at least a few guitars like this? thanks tf. Members Special J
Do they have new strings on them?
Members RDub_
Do they have new strings on them? my first thought as well that, and an epi LP sounds disgustingly awesome (might just be outshining the other guitars)
Members Prages
Could it be that those guitars sounded like that 25 years ago as well?

Members mrbrown49
they arn't all set up to the best but they could be worse Step 1: Change the strings Step 2: Set them up well Step 3: Clean the contacts on the output Jack

Members BG76
Low end guitars have gotten a lot better over the years. Contrary to what dealers have fooled a very large stupid portion of the guitar buying comunity into believing - older doesn't always mean better. Especially with the lower end stuff. I would take a new Agile or GFS guitar over the Hondos of my youth.
Members superdistortion
They probably sound the same as they did when you first got them. Your musical taste may have changed. I've only played one Ibanez. I thought it sounded lifeless. I think it was probably the basswood body and or the bridge.
Members toadface
the strings i could replace, though they have had them recently, a set up and clean is definately a necessity. the 1010sl was the steve lukather signature so i think was higher end(but its had the trem blocked because that WAS rubbish). cant look up much about the sb-70 because there werent many made, but its built like a tele with HB's. sounds good advice, i just wondered if there was anything else i should be looking out for. cheers guys tf. One more thing. Give the frets a good polish. That can help note definition considerably. If there are little flat spots on top of the frets recrown them. Those flat spots will kill sustain and note definition as well. Good luck.

A guitar of similar quality would be no more than $99 today.
