Members ffud
Hey I was wondering, other than the P'ups and some cosmetic stuff, does anyone know the differences between the SG standard series and the 61 Reissues? thanks
Members Espresso
I think the major difference is the neck profile. The standards have the 50's thicker neck.

Same thing with the equivalent Epiphone offerings. PS: I like the Standard with the thick neck best.

Members dattebayo1
All true, BUT... Big difference i noticed was the Standard has a beefed up neck joint with more body between the neck and neck pickup. The RI has the origional, scarily weak, neck joint that established the SGs reputation for having a weak neck joint. To be honest i prefer the RI, if you're not one to stand still whilst playing i'd vouch for the standard.
Members sxyryan
They have such a huge difference in price... there has to be something more than just neck joint and profile. Or I would hope. :poke::poke:
Members Randy80
Hi everyone! My first post here! The 61 reissue and the standard have actually many differences. The first and more obvius is the neck shape, that is thinner on the 61.Also the body contour of the 61 is slightly different: it's a bit thinner on the beavels (the 61 is also a bit lighter). Then the neck on the 61 joints the body on the 21th fret, while the neck joint is more on the 19 th fret on the standard: the result is more confort in playing on the higher position with the 61.The body on the 61 is usually a one piece, while (usually) the standard has a two pieces body. Finally, the pick ups are different: the 61 has 57 classic pick ups (really great!), while the standard has 490R and 498T pick ups (more modern and less bright). I can say that the 61 is more classic sounding, with a bell like tone, brighter and with more attack. It's perfect for classic crunchy ac dc tone. The standard is maybe a bit more modern (and more matched with higher gain tone), but also darker and less sensitive.About the differences in neck...you have to try by yourself: I do prefere the fatter neck on the standard, even if I prefer the tone on the 61. I don't think the street price of the two guitar is so different: in Italy the difference is about 400 or 500 euros on new guitars, while the price of a used standard and a used 61 is almost the same (in a range of 200 euros). Members BG76
I think the major difference is the neck profile. The standards have the 50's thicker neck. The tenon in the neck is different and the pickups are different. IMHO the Standard is a lot stronger. The neck profile is different. The routing under the guard is different as well. I think they do this so you can't buy a standard and stick a small guard on it. There is a route between the two pickups.
Members Dogsinotpalc
I like a fatter neck in general and also prefer the smaller pickguard of the reissue...the the perfect SG for me is not currently available.
Members metalheadUK
The '61 to me felt like an SG with an Ibanez wizard neck....
Members Mister Crow
I wish they made a Standard with 61 RI neck profile. I prefer the Standard's increased strength of neck made by the joining of the neck at the 19th fret- also this makes for less neck 'wobble'. But I prefer the 'wider' feeling neck profile of the 61 Reissue. I don't think there is a perfect SG for me out there.
