Members ponch
ive noticed that the nut in the gibson has tiny little slot for the strings to sit in, almost half way little slot bit, its the high e (1st) thats snapped, and i thought this was unusual as my fender and acoustic have big nut slots that the strings sit fine in. i was using ernie ball skinny top heavy bottom strings on the guitar (10-52) but im now looking at using the regular slinnkys (10-46). with the thinner gauge of string will this make it easier for the strings to sit in the nut ?thanks
Members revans513
Thinner strings will fit in the nut slots a little deeper, but strings really are supposed sit on the nut and the slots just keep the string there. Deep cut slots cause a lot of string binding.

Members EJD
File the nuts slots out a bit?
Members normh
In proper nut setup the string will only seat half the diameter of the string. However, if you do a lot of bends you might want to file the slot so that the string seats a full diameter so that it will not pop out of the slot. With the smaller gauges you may not be able to see the slot. With Gibson's world famous quality control, it would not surprise me if the nut was not slotted on a string or two. Giving rise to lesson one: When you buy a new guitar also budget for a proper setup.
Members mrbrown49
Unless it's popping out when you are playing it's fine.
