Members joekkl
For Les Paul lovers, Am I crazy to love plain top over flame tops?? I just can't stop GASing for the naturally aged plain top Les Paul. No hard feeling. I just don't feel the flame tops as much. What about you? Members bigconig
That's pretty common now a days. I blame all the cheap knock-off veneer topped guitars. Figured wood isn't nearly as special as it used to be. The original bursts, along with a lot of the newer historics have very subtle figuring which I like. They look like plaintops till the light hits 'em right. The one on the far right is my R0 flame top. and at another angle Of course a lot of people 'round here are quite fond of my plain top G0
Members mrbrown49
I'm not a big flame or quilt lover either.
Members Elias Graves
I'll take a nice plaintop any day. EG
Members Les Paul Lover
I don't like insane flames - but light flames or plain tops are lovely. Don't care much for quilting. Biconing, how do you like you black pearl? I certainly was impressed by the combo I tried!!!
Members ExiledCrow
I like flame/quilting ... a LOT! But on LPs Gibby or Epi I prefer a plain top. Dunno why, maybe 'cause mine is ...
Members joekkl
Oh wow, you have a wonderful plain top, my friend. Ever think about making a background wallpaper with it. It looks too nice.
Members Kap'n
Between the veneer tops and "lawyer bursts" out there I went with a plain ebony Standard. Neil Young, Jeff Beck (I know, oxblood) and Johnny Hickman can't be wrong. I went flametop for the Gretsch.
Members joekkl
It's just that the flames kind of "taking over" the eyes from the guitar itself, it's more 'pretty' than function kind-of deal. Please post some plaintops, naturally aged, sweat & tears, gig 8 hrs a day LP?
Members Bro Blue
Hellz naw - plain top LPs are the sexiest of all LPs.
Members bigconig
I don't like insane flames - but light flames or plain tops are lovely. Don't care much for quilting. Biconing, how do you like you black pearl? I certainly was impressed by the combo I tried!!! I love it. Very responsive to picking dynamics. With enough drive for what I do (I'm not big on cleans but don't use ultra high gain either) Here is a quick demo I did with the plaintop from a couple years ago. Excuse the rathe shite quality, audio is just from a cheap sony digital cam.
Members LaXu
Even with plain tops I like that there is some grain like on bigconig's LP. The G0 looks like a perfect LP to me. I wish manufacturers cut back on the veneers really. They never seem to end up looking as good as the properly thick real tops. I'd rather see that money spent on slightly better hardware, woods or QC.
Members Strat87
I prefer a nice faded burst on a plain top LP over figured wood any day, but don't mind a light flame. No quilts though. And any figured wood on a Fender looks awful IMHO.
Members Stspider
I'll take an interesting plain-ish but with a hint of flame top over a boring top with lots of parallel and thin flames every day.

Members jimtalkbox
+1 on plain tops. Although I liked a lightly figured flamed maple top as well...
Members bdegrande
Either plain or flame is fine with me (I wouldn't pay extra for either). I can't stand the look of quilted or spalted toos.

Members Dougie.Douglas
I really like both flame tops and quilting on LP's. I don't know why, but plain tops don't really do too much for me.
Members GreatDane
i have plenty of room in my heart for both plain tops and figured tops. here's a nice plain top, IMO: and here's a tasty figured top:

Members pvwolfgang5150
Naturally aged plain tops and lightly flamed tops are hard to beat. Quilted Les Pauls.....not so much.
Members Electric Monk
I like subtly figured maple over any other. Plain is nice, but I prefer it lightly figured. Once it gets too noticeable, there goes any chance of the guitar looking good at all. That keeps me off of a lot of PRS's and the like. One exception I can think of is burl maple - moltomario has a burl maple Parker, I think, that looked absolutely incredible.
