Members deadllama
Okay, so I'm in the process of paying off an '87 Am Std Strat on layaway now, and the reason I got a good deal on it is it's had EMG's installed in it at some point. They look kind of old, like they've been in the guitar a while. They still sound pretty Strat-ish, surprisingly. They've got white covers and gold EMG logos on them, and one master volume, one master tone, and the other tone knob wired as a preamp gain boost (clean when rolled off, +25dB of boost when all the way up). Any idea what these are? Nobody at the music store could identify them offhand. I don't have the guitar yet or I'd be posting pics. I have to admit, I thought I'd hate them because i've been pre-conditioned to hate EMG's, especially in a Strat, but they're not too bad. Of course, I'm still saving for new pickups, but still. Would these be SA's? I don't know a damn thing about EMG's.
Members bish0p34
You used to be able to look it up on their page. I think I remember the SA was the only single coil with no pole pieces showing. They make good p'ups, but get stereo-typed by the 81 I think. Members deadllama
Yeah there aren't any visible pole pieces. I'm just nervous about having a 9-volt flopping around under my pickguard, and also about having to change it.

Members cratz2
I think the SAs have the gold lettering and the Ss have silver or gray. The SAs are the strattier sounding of the two. They aren't bad pickups at all in their own right and they are fairly noise free, but compered back to back through a good amp against something like CS54s or CS69s, they don't really compare. But I'd live with them and try to make them work. As long as it has a proper output jack (3 leads) the battery is rated for about 2,000 hours of use. Just remember to ALWAYS unplug the cable from the guitar to maximize battery life.
Members vexed73
If they are old and have a battery they are the SA model. They are nice and have some but I prefer the SAV.
