Members xcml5
I am ordering either a PRS or Gibson tommorow. I have played all of the extensively, and can't seem to decide which one to go for. The different guitars are:PRS Custom 22 10 top, birds, wide thin neck, tremolo, in Black Slate. ($1900)PRS SC 245 10 top, birds, wide thin neck, in Tortoise Shell or McCarty Sunburst. ($1900)Gibson Les Paul 1960 VOS plain top in darkburst. ($2800). Right now, I am leaning towards the Custom 22 or the Les Paul. The only thing that is holding me back on the Les Paul is the price difference. The SC may be the cheaper alternative, but it is still not really like a real Les Paul and I'm not sure if I will like the pickups in my own setup, but it is very comfortable. The Les Paul sustains for days and sounds great, but the Custom 22 also sustains pretty damn well, sounds good too and weighs a bit less. What are your guys thoughts? They all feel good in my hands and all sound great, I am just trying to justify the Les Paul over the PRS. Thanks for any help!
Members IPlayMetronome
Logically, the SC245 splits the difference of the other options.I'd go for that:thu:

The SC245 does it clean up real well though.
Members Cassette
I picked the les paul because it's the most expensive, and it isn't my money

I am also considering a Les Paul Custom, but forgot to add it to the poll.
Members pvwolfgang5150
If you are going to spend that kind of money on a guitar, I say make sure that you are 100% satisfied, or don't buy it. So if the LP is your favorite, go for the LP.
Members Alecto
Gibsons are a real "try before you buy" proposition these days so I'd recommend finding one you really like in a store before dropping the thick end of $3,000 on it. You should also have it thoroughly checked over (even the truss rod, believe it or not) before taking it home. I, and a few friends, have regretted buying recent-issue Gibson mainly because of dodgy QC. PRS, on the other hand, is an extremely consistent brand. Sure it doesn't sound like a Gibson but it's a hell of a lot better made, and you can get it sounding closer if you swap out the pickups.

The Custom Shops seem to be a bit better and I have not seen a really bad one yet, except a Les Paul Custom Black Beauty that had a few sharp fret ends. But, it does seem like the Gibson is blowing the PRS out of the water
Members jtr654
Be patience and look for a Used guitars and there are a lot of them try them and find one or two you like. You probably be able to 2 guitars for the price of a New one.
Members mnewb1
I really like the PRS 245 and the VOS Les Paul. I would go with the Les Paul first, but I agree that I would try some first before I buy. Talking to someone at Wildwood might be a good idea as they seem to be stand up guys that deal in many custom shop Gibsons and I have heard that they can give you a very accurate tone report about any guitar that they have in stock. Yeah, the only main reason why I am ordering online is because one, I get killed by state tax, and two, I haven't gotten anywhere to negotiate that much locally. Thanks for the info about wildwood, I've been looking at their stuff for a while and they do have a nice inventory to chose from.
