Members 3leggeddog
Just ran across another "Gibson Les Paul--$500" ad on my local CL site. Of course when I called the guy he told me it was an Epiphone (I figured it would be anyway, but had to check). I wasn't even in the market for a Les Paul, and it still pissed me off a bit. Epiphone is NOT Gibson, as we all know. Sure, they are related companies, but so are Volkswagen and Bugatti. I should probably lighten up...but it gets to me everytime I see one of these listings. Its the same with the Line 6 Spider Valves listed as a "Bogner" everywhere.
Members zuzuman
I agree with you 100%. It's totally unethical. Listing it as "Gibson Epiphone" or "Epiphone by Gibson" also rubs me the wrong way, but at least it's honest. I understand that they put Gibson in the title so it will show up in search results, but it's always a bit of a let down when you find out what they are really selling. In the long run, wasting people's time builds bad will, which is the last thing you want if you are trying to build your reputation as an ethical trader. Members weather.at.8
This is all too common with Fender/Squier as well.

Members rakester
Seriously, what did you even call for? Because you would be stupid not to buy a Gibson Les Paul for 500 bucks Could sell it for twice as much as that and then some
Members Mr_GoodBomb
I understand that saying "Epiphone Gibson" or anything similar in an Ebay auction means anyone searching for those other items will find it, but... who the {censored} cares? What benefit does that do for them? If I'm looking for a Gibson, and see an Epiphone because of some "clever" wording, I doubt I'm going to see, "{censored}, I didn't know these existed, I'll get one of these instead." Members favata5
This is all too common with Fender/Squier as well. ummm no...Squier IS a part of Fender! and in some cases, for ex the Classic vibe series ,a much better deal as an instrument than a more expensive one
Members Mr_GoodBomb
ummm no...Squier IS a part of Fender! and in some cases, for ex the Classic vibe series ,a much better deal as an instrument than a more expensive one No, they're not. Same company, yes. Same designs (or similar, some many Squiers are lightly off), yes. Same products, no. Not from the same factories, or even countries, not using the same parts, Squier being a "part" of Fender is just a clever business move for their marketing. ...And I swear, if I hear "CV" here one more time... I get it, they're excellent instruments for the price, but come ON...
Members Alex_SF
Is it so difficult to add "-epiphone" or "-squier" (& also "-squire" given the state of public education) to search criteria?
Members 3leggeddog
In response to BoneNut, I called on the slim chance that this was one of those deals that we all hope to run across. I'll never give up hope... Really though, if it had been an actual Gibson in {censored}ty condition then $500 would have seemed more feasible than $500 for any used Epiphone regardless of how mint it might be...So thats why I called. Members Mac_C
There was a listing on my local CL that read - "Gibson Jr." Yeah, it was a 3/4 size Maestro V.

Members bisticles
I've seen people selling Epis marked as an "Epiphone Gibson model" before, but never just flat-out pretending like it's a Gibson. There's honest mistakes, and then there's just keyword spamming. A local guy keeps trying to sell his Fender Bassman, and every time it shows up, I get excited for about 0.5 seconds until I realize... oh yeah... *that* Bassman. Members guitarcapo
Some Epiphones have the word "Gibson" on the truss rod cover.
Members BoneNut
Some Epiphones have the word "Gibson" on the truss rod cover. Maybe Gibsons should have Epiphone on the truss cover since it's the money maker and practically what keeps it afloat. The other many companies they own don't rake in as much. Members Yavin
There was a listing on my local CL that read - "Gibson Jr." Yeah, it was a 3/4 size Maestro V. Yeah the Maestros are the ones that drive me nuts. One guy wanted $400 for his here on CL. I emailed with him on the same hope as the OP and he continued to argue with me that it was a REAL Gibson and easily worth what he was asking. Members Dega500
Seriously, what did you even call for? I have seen some decent faded Gibson Studios for $500. That would be worth calling for IMHO!
Members vintage clubber
Yep, from a few years back they sure do. that's exactly what mine has on it, but I would never list it as anything other than an Epiphone LP...
Members ashasha
Yep, pet frickin peeve of mine. And Mr Goodbomb hit it right on the head, I mean who the hell do they think they are fooling? If I am looking for a Gibson than I want a Gibson and if it's not a Gibson I am not going to buy anything other than a Gibson. Of course I just use -epiphone in my e-Bay searches and that helps for the most part. If it's blatant bull{censored} I report it and try to get it pulled. Members BoneNut
Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much hang up on a brand name. Quality? Characteristics? Playability? None of that has been discussed. Only brand names and country of origin. Is that what defines where a guitar's quality is? A faded Gibson Studio for $500 is a great deal... why... just because of the name on the headstock? I'd have to play the individual guitar before I could know if it was a great deal or even a great guitar. Terrific guitars come from many brands, countries and many price points. Same goes for {censored}ty guitars.
Members Carbohydrates
A faded Gibson Studio for $500 is a great deal... why... just because of the name on the headstock? Just because that particular model by that particular manufacturer sells for $800 new.

Members MichaelSaulnier
It's a "buyer beware" world out there on CL. Some sellers have become "keyword happy"... I've even seen stuff like: "not PRS, GIBSON, FENDER"... etc... so they come up in searches for those brands. Or just a big list at the bottom of the ad post with a ton of keywords. I suppose that stuff works or people wouldn't do it... but I for one hate "bad" results when I do a search. If I'm selling an Epiphone, I call it an Epiphone. If it's a Squier, then it's a Squier.
