New look for an old Ibanez Stagestar

I got this old battered axe from a friend and I wonder if this could be material for some experiments.

First I'd like to do a simple change of look. I was thinking about taking away the red paint and expose the wood.

How should I proceed ? Should I use sandpaper ?

After removing the paint, which varnish shoudl I use ? I'd like to give it a satin look, not a glossy one.
