Just got back from the orthodontist where we discussed the tab for my daughter's braces work.   I could buy my dream guitar (Gibson LP '58 reissue) with what this is going to cost me.

Figured I'd come here to HCEG and commiserate, since the wife is being non-sympathetic right now. So where's the bar? I need a drink.

I am militant about brushing all of my kids' teeth, but didn't think about flossing them since they were so far apart. Stupid in retrospect. Anyway, my oldest son had some cavities between his teeth last year (he was 5 then). Long story short, after fixing all of that it was around six grand. About $1800 out of pocket. And that was for BABY TEETH!

I know what you are saying.

You don't need drink. You need money. Say, how's left kidney and right lung? Me give very good ?????? if you sell me ????? and ??????... ;)

The family comes first. :cop:

The biggest joy of parenthood is when they're all out on their own and raising families. They come to visit, you fill the grandkids up with sugar and send them home. Pay backs are a bitch.:p

Does she actually need braces? Years ago it was fashionable for parents to have braces done for childs teeth who didnt need them. Just because it was fashionable for "prettier smile". If she really needs braces due to some problem, fine, if its just for fashion, is bad thing imo.

Braces are in the low maintenance years.

Wait until teenage-hood and the college tuition bills, kids car insurance etc etc. come rolling in. Then, it becomes a negative sum game as you begin to sell off equipment to fund it all ....

tell that little asshole to get a job and take out a loan for her own damn braces. when she asks for a ride to the orthodontists/work/bank, tell her you cant afford to spend the gas because of the gibson you just bought.

nah im just kidding, don't be a selfish bunghole. if a chick has crooked teeth in middle school/highschool, shes going to have one hell of a rough time in this day and age.

When I had too have braces in 77-80 it ran a total of $1800 -$2000.

My eldest daughter got them in 02-05 and the grand total was $5400 plus another $1000 in specialists,etc.. costs. All out of pocket mind you ({censored}ty insurance)

It was well worth it but damn I could have 2 Oxblood LPC's for around that much I suppose come too think of it.

Ouch! My boy is just over a year old, and only has 6 teeth, so no worries about that yet. We do try to wipe is teeth with a cloth when he's in the bath before bed, and sometimes after he eats. I didn't realize braces were sooo expensive!

On the plus side, he's stopped trying to chew on the tremolo bar of the strat I keep in the living room and has started occasionally strumming the guitar while I'm fretting a chord. He sort of whacks at it, but he seems to have fun.

Teeth!?! You're worried about payin' for dental work?

Hmmph, that ain't NOTHIN'!

Just you wait.

Exactly, how about 38 grand in prepaid college tuition.

Still saving for all the other college related expenses as well.

That's what I was thinking. I just lent my older daughter $9,000 for a car, plus there's college fees. I long for the days of braces.

I paid for braces for my son, my daughter, and my wife. Total out of pocket was over $15k. My son is done with school, but my daughter is currently attending a private college that goes for over $40k/yr. Fortunately, we are getting financial aid, but still -- when one has kids, one has something more important than guitars to spend money on...

Braces were the worst thing my parents ever put me through.

It cost them well over 6k, and 3 1/2 years of my life.

and you should probably thank them.... as someone with a big ass gap in his teeth, trust me I would kiss my parents ass everyday now if they had got me braces and got my {censored} fixed from the beginning.

to the OP, guitars/possessions will come and go- taking care of your loved ones is the most important thing period. If you really want a LP, cut out coffee or another one of your vices for a year to fund it :idk:

2 daughters in college, 1 of which is engaged, add 15 year old twins each of which just finished with braces and now you know why I'm buying a $50 guitar on Craig's and trying to rehab it. If I could get my money out of the Reverend it would already be gone.

Any working dude with a family in this economy would have to be pretty selfish to be sporting a new Gibson of almost any kind.
