Members oneshowmaster
Michael Hedges used tapping before Eddie. He was much better at it too.

Members O.G.T.V.
Randy Rhoads. Even if he played as a famous guy for a short time, he inspired a lot of guitarrists and still does today. I prefer his playing to EVH. More feeling, better sound, and more skill cuz of the classical music and his influences mixing altogether. Hear Mr. Crowley, I Don't Know, and Goodbye To Romance so you will know.

Members blood5150
Love Randy but he did not have better tone than EVH, or the same rhythm chops. Randy relied on power chords.... A lot.

Members Virgman
I didn't know Mayer played with Isaac Hayes? You have to hand it to Johnny Boy, he can play just about anything. I think I'm becoming a Mayer fan. When you crowd surf do chicks grab your crotch? Do guys grab your crotch?

Members GCDEF
Don't underestimate Van Halen's impact. Everything came together at the right time for that band. Van Halen changed the way guitar was played, but he couldn't have done it without the songs they had or without David Lee Roth, and they probably couldn't have done it if people weren't really sick of disco and most of the mainstream rock bands weren't really confused in the 70s. The answer is I don't think anybody else would have / could have done what he did.

Members Jacksix
If Jimi hadn't died, Van Halen wouldn't have been VAN HALEN. They would have just been another band. :poke: -Jacksix

Members Yngtchie Blacksteen
I've often been thinking how things would've been if Shawn Lane had joined a major label artist or band in 1981-82, that might have stolen a lot of Malmsteen's thunder, even if it would've been too late to challenge Eddie's title as Lord of the Strings. At that time, he had evolved sufficiently as a musician so that he could craft some astonishing solos that were listenable as well as technically mindblowing. There were guitarists around that were technically better than Van Halen. Van Halen is the one that got noticed because as well as the chops, they had mainstream appeal, great songs a charismatic singer and they were fun to listen to. That band had the whole package and without their commercial appeal, who knows what guitar playing would be like today. One thing for certain is it wouldn't be the same.
