Members EJD
They largely avoided releasing singles, instead preferring fans to listen to entire albums such as Dark Side of the Moon, which has sold more than 35 million copies around the world. Maybe it's about what the fans themselves prefer? Just a thought...

I think they're entitled to have influence over the way their music is presented, as it was meant to be listened to in context. Members vcnyls
I think they're entitled to have influence over the way their music is presented, as it was meant to be listened to in context. Floyd albums are about a whole not itty bitty parts You know, I agree with this in theory and respect PF's interest in protecting their art but they also really need to recognize what the listening public wants. No, they shouldn't cater to everything the public wants and start making pop rock stongs, but they should appreciate that without their audience they wouldn't be anywhere. Sure there are some people who only want to own "Comfortably Numb" but there are plenty of others who want the whole album and people should have a choice. Not to mention that the whole "We want people to hear the whole album. The songs shouldn't be listened to in a vaccuum." argument goes right out the window when you're a band that has released a greatest hits album. :poke:

But in general I'd have to still say that AHM, Meddle, Obscured are albums that don't need {censored}ing with, just listening from start to finish...a line needs to be drawn somewhere

Members crowguitar
As an artist, they're entitled to control how they're art is sold and marketed. The label was trying to pull a fast one by getting all "semantic" on the download issue. Whether they are rich or not, its still PF's music. And if they can pull something like that on one of the largest selling bands of all-time, think of all the smaller acts that are getting totally screwed. I don't really distinguish between greatest hits and anthology too much (maybe I'm missing the distinction). In my opinion, if you're going to say that albums should ONLY be listened to in their entirety then releasing any songs on any other album in any way should be against your belief. Members whitegreyblack
Are they going to sue me if I put Dark Side of the Moon on shuffle? Seriously though, even if it is contrary to what consumers want (let's be frank - the FANS either already own the complete albums or will buy them as such online), I agree that they have the right to present, package, and sell it as they please - if they have the creative control to do so (which is what they were fighting for, and won). Members noisebloom
Elizabeth Jones QC, appearing for EMI, disagreed and said the word "record" in the band's contract "plainly applies to the physical thing - there is nothing to suggest it applies to online distribution". Oh, the irony. A record label actually arguing that an online download is not a tangible product.
