Tried the Marshall Class 5 today...

And I was pretty impressed. I tried it next to a Vox AC4TV, which was also nice, but not, to my ear as good as the Marshall... which sounded 'bigger' (not just because of the fact that you couldn't scale it to 1, 1/4 watts like the Vox), and a bit more complex. I like the fact it's got a headphones output. I might get one.

Anyone else tried one/own one? Is it really as Plexi as it sounded to me today?

Can someone talk me out of it? (especially as I've been sucked into this bally forum, again, against my better intentions )

Hmm...how much clean is there in that amp? Have not tried one, but just seems like it would be hard to keep it clean with much volume. Looks extremely cool, though...

You're right - you don't get much clean with a 5 watter. However, for me that is just fine, as I have an AC30 for that... and my sense is that with a Marshall like this, you probably want it to do some mild crunch at a volume that doesn't smash your neighbour's windows... although it gets very loud, so getting it to full tilt still involved me entertaining the entire (very large) store.

I bought 2 of em. I have been using just one for the past 3 months with the band one at home.Absolutely love it. Amp has got some real balls.:poke:My drummer is pretty loud[ arent they all]and we have keyboards and sax and another guitar and bass. Been running a RP 500 and a digitech gigadelay thru it.My volume is set on 4. Plenty loud. Amp kicks ass with NO effects also. Have played teles, strats and Les pauls thru it Along with an old ES 5 I have with 3 P 90's.My main guitar right now is a Les paul . Can get some sweet tones with this combo.Have heard that the ones the europeans got had a rattleing problem. So far so good on my end . No problems at all. Made in England and for less than 400 bucks you would be crazy not to check them out.For the price of a so called boutique amp that does a lot less you could get 3 of these. And sell em in 25 years for 2000 bucks apiece:idea:;).

I prefer the Vox, but that's just me.

I already own an AC30, which I obviously love to bits, so I was looking for something in a different ball park. I know the AC4TV is different to 15s and 30s, but it still has that biting Vox tonality to it... which is great, but I fancy something fatter, meatier, greasier and generally dripping with lard.

So the Class 5 is plenty loud for jamming with a drummer? Can you get anywhere near even a slightly clean tone at those volumes? How does the amp sound at lower "apartment" volumes?

Yes ,yes and yes. Like I said I run a RP 500 thru it and I use the distortions from it. Sounds great at bedroom levels. What do you want for 400 bucks?:poke::confused:Great little amp I have nothing to bitch about.
:eek::cool::pAlso can drive a 4 by 12 stack if need be.
Like I said you can buy something 3 times more expensive that does a lot less.Guitar plugged straight in sounds very simliar to bluesbreaker. It's nice to see Marshall make a really nice affordable tube amp.Now if they would just make a 1 by 12 version.:poke::poke::idea: Just have to try one out and see if it's right for you.

Have one - love it. The stock EL84 was microphonic though, I had to swap it for another JJ EL84. No rattle when dimed (see vids). Good clean tone but not much headroom - but who's buying a Marshall for clean tones? Works fine with every guitar I used with.

Alone, with a Gibson R7 LP, at volume 8, 6 and then 4:

A sample with a P90 guitar and a clean booster and a little backtrack, thru an external cab (celestion alnico blue):

I played one for about half an hour a few weeks ago at Sam Ash. I'm not a Marshall guy, I'm not a 5W guy and I gots to have my reverbs. BUT... I like the 'larger than average for the class' 10" speaker and I like the 'larger than average for the class' cabinet size.

I was pretty impressed. It played loud enough clean to have half the people in the store aware of what you are playing, but yeah... it doesn't have nearly as much clean headroom as a Blues Jr or an AC15 for example.

I haven't compared them against each other, but my general thought is I'd lean towards the 10" AC4TV over the Class 5 but again, neither of these amps is 'me' so I'm not a very good judge.
