What are you supposed to do at age 47?

I need your recipe for THAT one, GG.

No magic formula

1. With my electronics degree I've managed to stay employed at the same reasonably well paying job for nearly two decades.

2. Being a divorced dad, I learned to really hunker down financially and my housing/living expenses are well below my means.

3. My woman also works as a tech at the same place I do; we're fairly equal in intelligence and social class.

4. Most importantly, I sobered up! Constant partying burns up a lot of cash not to mention how expensive legal problems can be.

usually older men of that age fall in love with younger women, start to make sport, douche everyday and shave

Rudi, if I douche and shave everyday, will that make me more attractive to younger women?

;)

[P.S. In French, douche means "to shower".... It doesn't mean "to irrigate one's vagina", as it does in English. I do think our dear, dear Euro-pal Rudi, bless his Swiss little heart, is using the word in the French sense....? I hope so, anyway.]

The US Census lists middle age as including both the age categories 35 to 44 and 45 to 54, while prominent social scientist, Erik Erikson, sees it ending a little later and defines middle adulthood as between 40 and 65.

I've always thought of middle age as 40-64 myself. Here's how I've always broken it down:

0-17: childhood, 18-39: young adult, 40-64: middle age, 65-the rest of your life: elderly (or senior, if you prefer).

Best,

Geoff

So what do you consider 47 then? Elderly?

You guys must be "middle aged" because this hit a button for you.:)

So I will rephrase my statement. If you are 47 you are beyond the point at which "middle age" has started.

If you live to be 80 (and most do not) 40 is the middle of your life. It is very healthy for a man to realize that he has crossed the threshold into middle aged. It take a lot of energy to keep pretending that one is 25. Accept that you are now middle aged and get on with your life, is my phiolosphy. That is why I shaved my head when I turned 40.

Know the truth and the truth will set you free.

But Jotown, I want to drink straight tequila, take XTC, moshpit all night, then wake up naked in bed Sunday morning with five unknown strangers.

Can't I still do that at age 47? ;)

Of course you can; have at it. But just don't lie about your age to those teenage hookers at the bar.

I wished you happy birthday too?

Thank you, Jotown. I really do appreciate it. Really!!!!! :thu::thu::thu::love::love::love:

I thank all of you here for being my friend and for letting me stick my 2cents in on things, however inane. [[hug]]

What should you do? Live.

Not exist, not cope, but really live.

I make two commitments to myself for every new year:

1. Do something that I've always wanted to do.
2. Do something that scares me.

Well, in answer to your post...first, congrats! Second, that was a long time ago in my rear-view mirror so it is hard to remember what I did at 47. I vaguely recall doing my best to keep learning stuff. I started piano lessons around 42 (played another instrument as a child,) started traveling, changed my reading habits (from software manuals and non-fiction to travel books and fiction) etc. I guess the big thing was to keep learning. In addition, I got a lot healthier... lost a ton of weight, exercise 3-5 times per week etc. Also, I always had an eye on my financial future and really kicked that into gear in a big way in my 40's.... I am semi-retired now and it is sweet. But the big thing... keep learning, keep growing, keep having fun and keep an open mind! Congrats again!

+1000. And that is what "middle age" is all about Charlie Brown.

Just what is one supposed to do with one's life when he turns 47, anyway??
It's a strange kind of repeat-adolescence: I'm neither young nor old. I'm not a teeny-bopper yet I'm not subscribing to AARP yet, either.

You have come to the stark realization that you did not get to fulfill the rawk dream of "hope I die before I get old".

Happy Birthday - you are now entering your numerological "4" cycle - the past 3 years you have resorted your life, ditched some old friends, gained some new ones, possibly moved house - the 4 cycle is about planning and organising what you are now going to do with this new life aspect.

I appreciate the Numerology, John... Thank you. :)

You can try to do that, but you might want to take a nap on Saturday afternoon, just in case. :thu:

Yeah, can you picture what James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Jim Morrison would look like TODAY, had they lived?

Would we still be so ga-ga over them culturally, d'you think?

Hey Ras,

Happy Birthday. The older I get the more I value time with family and friends so you have the right idea hanging out with your family. :thu: Aside from that, I think the entire purpose of this earth plane is to serve and love each other, no matter what your age.

(When we`re young, its all about me, me, me... then you eventually realize, its all connected and you start to focus more on others... at least this has been my experience).

Peace,
EB

To think I used to dance around my bedroom in 1979, singing along with my Blondie record: "DIE YOUNG! STAY PRIT--TAY"

Happy Birthday Ras

Yeah, I hear ya man... in 1979 I made love to a girl with pink hair through Blondie Parallel Lines, 'cause she liked that album. Well, I had to get up once to flip the record, but other than that it was 40 minutes and 9 seconds of uninterrupted bliss, save approximately 4 seconds of silence between each song.

Even after all these years whenever I hear a song from that album I feel both a little frisky and a little blue... sort of a frisky-blue. It's like a misty-blue only different..

Where has the time gone? I miss my girl with pink hair, dammit! (Or Magenta, whatever)

As for what to do at 47... same thing you did at 27 maybe. That's pretty much where I'm stuck more or less. Nothing's really changed physically or the way I think or feel since about 27, so I'm kinda in this limbo. The most frustrating thing about it really is I've been waiting and waiting for my beard to get some gray in it so I can trim it just like Sean Connery in the movie, "Hunt for Red October." Instead I look more like Alan Parsons did in the 80

47 (and middle age in general) can, and should, be the best years of your life. This has been true for me. It's just a number. There is nothing more liberating than realizing that you are a grown up now. Inhabit it, revel in it, and get on with the joy of your life.
