Members scolfax
I'm embarrassed to say I'm not in shape. According to the BMI standard, I'm on the high side of overweight. I have fought it for over a decade now, with little success. Now that I'm heading into my mid-life crisis time-frame, I'm worried about how it's affecting my health. At the same time, I admitted to my wife that I have an unjustified but serious case of GAS for the 7-string Ibanez Universe reissue (UV77REMC): Everyone I know thinks this guitar is ugly, but I spent a long time listening to Passion and Warfare, and staring at pictures of these in Guitar World when I was around 18, and there's something magical about it to me. So I made a deal with my wife. If I lose 25 lbs, and keep it off for six months, I can pretty much buy whatever guitar I want. It's an idea so crazy, I think it will work! Edit: I didn't realize how limited this run was going to be. Only 60 are being made, and I just found out that the guitar is at least $2k over my (admittedly insane) limit. Too bad, I wanted one to play, not as a collector's item. I'll probably keep it under $2500 out the door. Need to start thinking of alternatives! http://www.makenmusic.com/product.cfm?prodID=1533&catID=

Members RaVenCAD
According to my wife, men have an unfair advantage when it comes to dieting. Our bodies store fat with far less greed, so they seem to let go of it more easily than women's bodies do. You'll do fine on your diet.

Members LesPaulSpecial1981
best of luck! you can do it. one of the teachers at my school had struggled with weight for a while, but this year (he's nearly 60) he started eating right and going to the gym every day for about an hour. he lost 57 lbs! inspiration for us all. Members soliloquy
try this for breakfast: dymatize iso-100 with milk or water flax seed break with smoked chicken or turkey and pepper with a bit of olive oil half a grape fruit(keep it out for a week, the skin thins out, and it becomes fairly sweet! ) 2 pills of fish oil or omega 3 oil with flax seed or whatever source of omega-3 you'll get there in no time! as for the guitar, you could always make that guitar. grab a regular RG body, learn how to do swirls, grab a transparent pick guard, and some how cut a monkey grip into the body. the lion claw trem space would be a bit hard to do though, but hey, if you're willing to drop 25 lbs for that, then you can grab the lion claw as well! go to project guitar for it. you'll save at least a grand on that
Members rocknhard
You can do it bro, cut out the sugars, and any treats. No eating after 7:00 pm. only popcorn.
Members brandass
Hey SF brutha, you've inspired me - I've gotta drop some weight too, and the best reason (health) just doesn't get me outta bed early enough. I'm sure my wife will go for this (though with a far smaller budget!) and I know I will. Dude, thanks! And good luck with your effort as well, damned fine carrot in my opinion! Members cratz2
When I was married, my wife and I would go on a diet, usually pretty short-lived, but yeah... usually she'd lose 4 lbs and I'd lose 20. Without really trying much. Everyone is different, but for me, I'd go to diet drinks and ZERO sweet stuff and it would just pour off. I'm not a big believer in the Atkins diet for a long term choice, but for dropping weight, it ALWAYS works if you stick with it. But for most Americans, it's VERY hard to stick to it 100%. Members whataracket
I highly recommend that you read at least the first several chapters of Dr. Atkins' book. It explains very clearly what causes your body to store fat and what will cause it to burn stored fat. It's knowledge everyone should have. A lot of what the diet industry spews is misleading. Members faberbz
Good luck! If protein is the fuel to keep the engine burning, water is the oil. Drink lots of water in addition to whatever food plan you choose. And incentives like your dream guitar are perfect! Post it when you get it! Members danswon
without getting too specific, as a man, if you get around 1500cal and go for a brisk 30-60 min walk every day you should lose loads of weight, but at a healthy rate. Members RDub_
I was born with thyroids that are on the verge of graves disease status I couldn't gain weight if I tried BUT I worked out with a friend my freshman year while he was dieting and trying to drop serious pounds. He dropped a lot of carbs and crap food (like cokes and chips and ice cream), replaced them with lean proteins, and then just cycled through a lot of different typed of exercises at our gym. He said he noticed the most difference after cardio workouts, so if you can ride a bike, I recommend doing that for at least 30 mins daily. You will not only see a difference but just feel a lot better overall.
Members Tidal Rhythm
. only popcorn. That alone can make a huge difference. Try to structure activities for the down time that you would otherwise spend eating. When you do eat, do NOT do it in combination with other activities (like watching TV.) If you're eating, that should be the only thing you're focussed on and you shouldn't reinforce it by pairing it with other pleasurable activities. Members Grantus
Good luck. I'm trying to lose weight myself lately, with so far limited success. Maybe I should talk my wife into buying me a new guitar if I lose 30 lbs.

Members scolfax
Thanks for the encouragement and advice! It's day 2 and I can already tell that this "carrot" is exactly the motivation I needed. Lex.Luthier gave some great advice about looking at custom guitars. There are a ton of great guitars in my price range. Suhr is at the top of my list, as well as some of the great stuff at Wayne Charvel's shop:

I don't know of an online resource that provides the text of the book. However, I'll bet used bookstores have lots of copies available cheap from the low-carb diet craze a few years ago. Once I hit my initial goal of 30 pounds, I bought my Les Paul. It was a nice motivator....but I feel SO much better...now I'm pressing towards 40 pounds...you can do it! and check out Weight Watchers. Sounds hokey...but it works, and you don't have to buy food from them...
