Members Bbreaker
Do all pearl/tortoise pickguards emit gas over time? It's a stock custom shop SG Std.
Members PanaDP
All plastics period emit gasses over time. That's why old fender plastics shrink and gibson tuner knobs dry out and crumble. I've never heard of those gases causing this kind of harm, though. They should be in incredibly tiny quantities.
Members jpnyc
I think that if those pickguards cause tarnishing there would be a lot more posts by now. Are you using any other chemicals that could be doing it?

Members Bob411
Never herd of it before. I install carpet, and 15 or 20 years ago we had a problem with white, or very light color berber carpet yellowing. It was from the gasses of the glue that held bonded pad together. I know that doesn't help much, but at least I can tell you the name of the gas is VOC = volatile organic compounds. Maybe that will help you Googling your problem. Members thick_mike
VOC is a general term for any solvent that contains carbon, e.g. acetone, propanone, ethyl acetate, white sprirts etc.I can't think of any gas that might be given off by a plastic that might corrode or discolour metal hardware on a guitar.I'd imagine that this isn't the only guitar that you own that has a MOP pickguard???? Members revans513
Lou maybe change cases for a while. I'd think it would be something like an adhesive (to glue the velour in the case) or something like that.
Members Jkater
Well, maybe the toilet seat it came from had stocked quite a bit of gas before being harvested. More seriously, good luck witht fixing the problem, Bb.
