Members Josh S
Whatever the American equivalent to Canadian Tire is, I guess. ...Keep in mind, the whole point of the neck plate is to spread the load from the screws. You'll probably crack the wood a bit with just washers.

A lot of companies mount there necks without a plate, ibanez do this a lot...and parker...Just wondering how to do it
Members DaleH
If I was going to do that I would get the steel inserts that go into the neck. Then use bolts not screws.

Members cratz2
So you want to go to no neckplate just for the look? I've had no neck plate on my #1 strat for about 3 or 4 years now. I just have the washers that essentially make the screws work as counter-sunk screws. I don't have a pic handy, but they are about 3/4 on a inch in diameter and flat on the bottom, but sort of wavy on the top.

Pretty much just for looks and to relieve a bit more weight (my build is a bit on the weighty side). But however I think it just looks more aesthetically pleasing than a metal plate as well

Members ashtray
Home depot sells screws that will work that look just like the more pricey guitar market ones. As for not using a neck plate - just expect some finish cracks if you overtighten a screw. Also note that without a neckplate the screws will go slightly deeper into the neck. Make sure they won't come out through the fretbaord - ESP if you are ordering yourown screws!
Members mike42
I have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to eliminate a neck plate. A plate seems to me to be just about the perfect way to distribute the pressure of the mounting screws. I have a couple of Godins with no plates, and I always just assumed that was a cost cutting measure, rather than an upgrade. I always feel a need to be extra careful about getting balanced torque on the Godin screws, since there is no plate to help balance it out.
