Go to a guitar store and play a bunch of different types in your price range and pick the one that

1) feels comfortable

2) sounds nice

Also be sure to play it through an amp that's in your price range. Amps make a much bigger difference in sound than the guitar does.

check these out.

Jay Turser

Squier

Rondomusic

Agile guitars

Ibanez

Stay away from First Act.

As far as picks, make sure to get varying gauges. I recommend some .38s, .7xs, and some 1+ mms. A cable shouldn't cost more than $5. Check craigslist for amps. Look for these amps

Peavey

Line 6

Roland

Stay away from

Fender

Rogue

Raven

If you can get an amp with built in effects even better :thu: you don't need more than 30 watts but don't get a 5 watt amp, they sound so bad

If you don't have any guitar player friends hit us up before you purchase anything and we'll let you know if you're overpaying or whatever.

Also, get some packs of strings. They're usually about $5 a pack. Just get 10s

For $200, I think you should look through the local CraigsList offerings, find something in your price range, and then report back to us with some links so we can give you "Go-No Go" advice.

IMO, the best value in a starter guitar is the Ibanez GAX-70. Maybe you can get lucky and pair up a used one with a used Roland MicroCube.

Those would be my two recommendations.

i cant really say because ive never played one, but i have been watching ebay for one of these.

my son bought the ijx30 starter pack, which looks similar in body shape and size, and i really like his.

i think the gax70 might come with pretty decent pups too.

i want one.

I'd recommend saving up another $200.

You could start with one of Squier's Telecasters, that run you about $200. You'll need an amp and a Vox Pathfinder 15R combo would be a good choice.

You'll have $100 left over to spend on a few other things you'll need... a tuner, a couple of extra packs of strings, strap, cable, a handful of picks and you might want to get some kind of learning DVD and possibly a cheap overdrive pedal.

I agree. $200 for all that, you're not going to be very happy very soon with what that kind of money can buy.

To qualify, as a beginner with $200, it probably won't make much difference what you get. You'll be learning, and trust me, you'll still sound like butthole on a $3000 Gibson.

That said, it depends on the kind of rig you're looking for, but $200 for the whole rig will pretty much limit you to low-end stuff if you split it evenly. I tend to think a guitar is more important than an amp, though, so if I was looking, I'd spend $20 on a Danelectro HoneyTone mini-amp just to be heard, then reserve $150-170 for a used guitar. At that price point, you could get into used Agiles, low-mid Korean Epiphones, maybe even an old U.S. Peavey Predator.

I wouldn't recommend the starter pack, either. It's cheap stuff, and unless you absolutely want every bit of it, you can do better assembling your own starter pack.

How does this look?
http://lakecharles.craigslist.org/msg/1636684819.html

Keep in mind that because of the brand, you may raise some eyebrows when you announce at the dinner table: "OK, well, I'm going to go play my Johnson now!"

In all seriousness, I don't know anything about Johnsons. Good starter brands are Squier and the Ibanez GAX-70 I referred to above. Best starter amp hands-down you can get is the Roland MicroCube. I've seen MicroCubes going for $75, so that'd leave you $125 for a guitar...which still isn't much.
