Members EADGBE
Yep they sound great in a Les Paul. I think Tom Scholz used them on his Boston albums.
Members GAS Man
IIRC, Ace Frehley with Kiss did as well. His Gibson Sig model LP was loaded with them. The Super D is one of those cool ceramic pickups that also cleans up real well. I've bought one to put in my stepson's Iceman, and that turned out well. So now I have a new one pending installation into a PRS SE Custom 24. I think that will be a winner too. Members Seeds
I have a SD/PAF Pro in a LP... I love it. Big ballsy tone that can clean up well. Perfect for Hard, classic rock and more.
Members Citizen Cain
THE custom pickup combo back in the day, and I was there to live it, were DiMarzio Super Distortion Bridge and PAF neck. It rocked hard through a JMP 50w MV Marshall, too
Members ExiledCrow
I've got a Super3 in the bridge of my Epi LP and LOVE it! The sustain is beautiful ....
Members V-Type
I had a DiMarzio Super D set ala Frehley in my 85 Gibson LP Custom. This was back in the 80's mind you. When I bought the guitar new(just over $1000 btw) for some reason the shop was offering a free set of Dimarzios installed per some deal they were running in conjuction with their Gibby purchases.Free pickups and installation as well as a pro setup all included. Sold! Anyways that guitar was 14 pounds of Mahogany and sounded incredible with the Super D's.I really like the blues growl they get in the neck and the bridge tone is what dreams are made of imo.So many guys use/used them that its probably the most popular after market pickup out there period. Members cratz2
I think it also largely depends on your amp, effects and how loud you play. I'd imagine if a lot of folks that are used to Burstbuckers or 57 Classics in their Les Paul that only play at reasonable levels through dark-ish amps popped in a Super Distortion, they'd be very surprised at how dark it sounds. Not really muddy, but dark. MUCH darker than the Burstbuckers. If you play through a Super Lead at gig levels, just a little tweak here and there and you'll be in business. The Super Distortion in an all mahogany, no maple LP is the polar opposite of a JB directly bolted to an alder body strat and a Floyd Rose. Lots of great players have played each setup, but for a random player that doesn't have much experience playing at gig levels, it would be easy to why that player might think the first guitar was WAY too dark and second one was WAY too bright.
