Members Rocktopus
Allow me to share a new discovery. Many of you probably know about it already but some may not. There is a way to kill the hum in all five positions of your strat without swapping your pickups for hot rails or some such crap. It's called BPSCC by Suhr and, although I don't own it yet, I definitely will because I heard it works great. Okay, so there's my contribution to the community. Now for my question. Apparently, the typical RWRP (reverse wind, reverse polarity) middle pickup in an SSS configuration needs to be swapped out with a non-RWRP pickup to achieve hum cancelling in all positions. But I don't want to swap my pickup for another one. I like my middle pickup. Can I send it away to get rewound in a non-RWRP configuration? Could the same result be reached by adding some sort of phase switch?
Members jrockbridge
From what I've read, the BPSSC works a lot like a dummy coil with a potentiometer. The BPSSC is adjustable. You can get rid of about 80% of the noise with the BPSSC. Some people report that it does cut a tiny bit of high frequency similar to what happens with a dummy coil. Bottom line, it works ok, but maybe not well enough to justify the high price. a dummy coil and potentiometer is MUCH less money. Members Rocktopus
I'm reading lots on this subject and people keep saying things like, "you have to swap your middle pickup for one that's non-RWRP" But that strikes me as absurd. Can't you just throw a phase switch on the middle pickup? Someone close to me and smart about this kind of stuff has already suggested that you can. Members ashasha
I believe that it has more to do with the direction of the windings than it does the polarity of the coil which is all a phase switch would do. I was really into this about a year ago, but after everything was said and done it was cheaper and easier to just get some Bill Lawrence pickups that are noiseless and a lot cheaper than the BPSCC system. I don't mind paying money for something that works, but it's just a few loops of coil turned into a coil/antenna and a few mini pots. They've got about $0.25 worth of {censored} in that thing and it's ridiculously priced.
