... assisting a friend in choosing and buying an acoustic electric. We tried many in his budget range (up to 800 euros). We tried a taylor made in Mexico among others. Pretty disappointing guitar for the price. Short story: We both were amazed by the quality of the chinese made Yamaha LJX6 CA. absolutely flawless and incredibly well set up right from the box. Sounded and played like a much more expensive guitar and beautiful, too.

what makes it on topic here is that, while I let him try a few suggested acoustic guitars in peace, I went to the electric guitars section and tried a bunch. I rarely have access to a huge guitar store and it was quite a treat. the biggest shock was how ugly i found the gretsch white falcon with its gold flake body binding, etc. It may be an acquired taste. Les paul standards and tradtional were nice. Fender american standards were disappointing. Did those guys get a bad batch? I tried a few and not a single one of them I would have bought for 1,100 euros.

Anyone from Europe went to that store? What did you think?

6 HOURS?!?!?!

From about 11:00 a.m to 5:30 p.m. On top of that it was a four hours drive so we were 8 hours on the autobahn. we left early morning, were back home in the dark. Time flies when you're having fun...

I've heard really good things about Yamaha guitars!

Yup. The favorite instrument I have ever owned is a Yamaha Acoustic electric. Jkater has seen the pics.

I was actually looking at this very guitar as a backup and for small acoustic gigs around the area so I wouldnt have to risk damaging my nice one at these small gigs.

Nice to hear your review is positive, but then, there is just about nothing I have ever seen with the Yamaha logo on it that wasnt at least nice for the money if not completely fantastic.

This could very well be my next acoustic purchase.

PS, I have always thought the white falcon is one of the guadiest ,stupidest looking guitaers I have ever seen. Has nothing to do with Gretch, or This model, just the color scheme and all the ridiculous bling. Looks like it was drawn by a second grade female with a bunch of crayons and some glitter glue. The only thing missing is a bunch of stickers of unicorns and butterflies.

STUPID stupid looking guitar.

WTF. Any OTHER guitar would look stupid if you're playing it in a nudie suit!

I almost bought a Yamaha about a year ago - one around that level. It was great, but was just pipped to the post by a Martin DC1-E. I spent hours coming to a decision too. I also didn't much like the Taylors - even the high end ones. They were too trebly. And some of the Martins were also a bit ropey. In general, the Yamahas were quite consistent. However, like every other kind of guitar, they all sound and feel quite different, even guitars of the same model.

It's definitely worth spending lots of time getting the right acoustic - more important in some ways than the electrics, which are more tweakable after the event.

Not much different for me either here. I tried some out and even tried a deluxe out but I liked the neck on my MIM better...go figure :idk:

And after adding some of Bryan's killer V60..it was almost perfect...or it will be once I get it back from a refret...I hope

You guys don't like this???

Dont like would be a huge improvement for the bitter hatred I have for that guitar. If I could get my hands on that, I would kill it dead 1000 times, and then I would kill it again at least another hundred times, just to make sure it was dead.

From the safe distance of this picture, it looks wonderful. From up close and on my lap, it looked tacky to the point of being unbearable.

If you think HC 2.0 hurts the eyes, try looking at the sparkly gold binding on the stark white finish of that guitar (not shown on that front view pic). It was shockingly ugly but that's my taste.

That gretsch does look terribly gaudy!!!!!!!

I couldn't own one - well... if given to me perhap's!

As to strat, Ihve decided a while back to buy one - decided to try other strat like guitar, and have my eyes on a Vigier in a local shop - it made the real strat sound spiritless, lifeless, baland and unremarkable.

The vigier's pick ups (di marzio virtual vintage 54) had the same glassy/bell tone, but had some much more warmth to them - and the guitar is much better made too.

Perhaps next week, when I get my redundancy cash....... :p

Looks like that with white pick ups:

Christ, you'd better not step into a shop that sells it mistakenly, or you may have an akward conversation with the salesman, trying to explain him exactly why you're dancing around that burning wreck of a gretsch.....

I think it's done in real life (that is, war). They call it euphemistically "confirming the death". I can't phantom that stuff.
