Members strtdv
Guthrie is at his best when he's playing backing guitar for another artist. I find his solo stuff technically brilliant but boring.
Members Rekel
I find his solo stuff technically brilliant but boring. I was about to say the same thing. His technique is superb but imo, he still lacks a certain feel. That may improve when he gets a little older, though. I was thinking about posting a few clips by Alex Hutchings in this thread but decided it was better in another one. In case you may have missed it: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showpost.php?p=39662131&postcount=

That may improve when he gets a little older, though. I don't feel he lacks feel. He's got crazy chops and isn't shred crazy like MAB. I find his playing to be sweet and melodic. As far as age goes, I feel he and Rob Marcello are the best 2 younger guitarists out there.
Members CrackerD
That was great! The only one that didn't really nail it was Jimi. Still totally awesome skilz.
Members Rekel
I don't feel he lacks feel. Neither do I and that's not what I said. That's why I intentionally used the word "certain". I just wish Govan would learn to breath a little more between licks. I think he's putting too much emphasis on technique for my taste and communicating his message across suffers from that, imho. I also think that his dynamics aren't as expressive as they could be. This breathing and dynamics is what sets players like BB King, Brent Mason, SRV, Vince Gill and Clint Strong (to name a few) apart from others. For me, Hutchings is in that same ball park. But yeah, Govan IS a monster player who knows his way around the instrument without a doubt.

He didn't really nail the feel of any of them. Pete is much more in your face than that, the Edge is much more rhythmic, BB King much more soulful etc. It sounded like someone doing an impression, but nothing more. He is a great player though. Members foppy
Yeah, this guy's been getting a lot of adulation around here lately. I do my duty and listen to the clips, am impressed by the technique, and then it's over. I never wish the clips are longer than they are. The music he plays I don't like. His own stuff--when he's not doing "impressions"--is nothing I'd ever want to listen to. It sounds like musak at the mall with some technically dazzling guitar playing stuck on top of it. He does display a lot of technique, but he's very musical, and he can be very melodic in a traditional sense but also ventures into some more chromatic fusion type stuff, and you'll see a lot of interesting rhythm/time stuff too in his own pieces. It's guitar heavy instrumental music. So if you don't like that kind of stuff, you probably won't like his solo work. Okay, he might not nail every single one of those impression dead on either, but not too many guys who can pull a BB sound like that (I thought he really had that vibrato and tone down) and then jump right in EVH...not many guys can do that. Members mcmurray
"Elevator musak" indeed. "Elevator musak" - the typical response from people that can't wrap their head around good instrumental music.

Members foppy
Actually that "Wonderful Slippery Thing" (a Kenny G title if I ever heard one) was one of the ones I have in mind. Can't you guys hear how nerdy and middle-aged that title is? And the song itself, yeesh. I'm walking through the mall on my way to buy socks, and it's actually a relief to hear whatever vocals crap they're playing inside Banana Republic. Then again I just got out of my car which was blaring the Stooges' "1970" which makes a lot of stuff sound like elevator music. To each his own, of course. I just have never heard one scrap of the attitude in this guy's music that made me like listening to guitar in the first place. And I'm not just talking about Stooges type stuff. I love a few virtuosos like Django, Jimmy Bryant, Danny Gatton i.e. people who play with fire, attitude, and personality.
