Opinions on Epi Dot Deluxe

They are terrific guitars and one of the best bangs for the buck out there.

My only caution is that you should try before you buy if possible or buy from a retailer with a good return policy. Epi does make a few dogs now and then. You don't want stuck with one of those.

True dat. I had a regular Epi Dot about 2 years ago and while it was a real nice guitar, I never really dug it and I sold it. Now I've been wanting an Epi Dot Studio, which in my opinion is an even better deal. No pickguard, and only one set of vol and tone controls, lower price. The pickups are a little hotter than on the regular Dot and sound a little better to my ears. To get a good comparison of the regular Dot vs the Dot Studio you can check out fellow forumite dcooper830 on YouTube. He even posted a video there comparing the Epi Dot vs. the Gibson equivalent. Warning: after you hear him play, you'll want an Epi Dot (or Studio)!

The Dot Deluxe really is one of Epiphone's best models IMHO. It's cheaper than a Sheraton which is a great guitar, but it doesn't feel cheap.

Those pickups though....man they aren't the worst things ever, but putting a set of real '57 Classics in there made it sound amazing. You can get by with the stock ones, but I'm telling you that a pickup upgrade puts that thing in another league.

So the "'57 Classic alnico-style pickups" they advertise as a feature that makes the "Deluxe" different than the standard Dot aren't the real thing, and will need to be upgraded as well?

Afaik, the only thing that makes them Deluxe is the finish. I wasn't aware of their being a difference in pickups. However, the Studio is a step down from both, at least cost-wise. Maybe those are different in the pickup department. I don't think any of them have anything other than a knock off of a better pickup. They're ok, but noticeably different from the 57 Classics, ime.

Epi definitely has two grades of pickups. My Alleykat came with the 57 Classic and it was pretty good. The cheapos that came in my Epi SG Special weren't worth the wire they were wrapped in. The better Epis get better pickups. They are liveable, but much better can be had.

I've been GASing for a 335-style on the cheap. I'm not a big fan of gold hardware, but these are cheaper than the Epi Dot. And they have '57 Classic alnico-style pickups.

Anyone own or played one?

That's a good price. (MF is still showing them for $399, backordered until June.)

I pulled one off the wall at a GC once, but didn;t plug in. Fit, finish, feel, unplugged action were all very nice.

Nope. In fact the Dot and Dot Deluxe actually have the same pickups, Epi puts its versions of the 57 Classic In a lot of its guitars. The only difference between the Dot and Dot deluxe is cosmetic. They aren't bad pickups, but they aren't the greatest either. I have them in my epi Lucille. The bridge pickup IMO sounds great the neck is less than inspiring

Ahhh... OK, that's a little misleading. Or is it just "creative advertising?" :cop::lol:
