Members laidback
Could someone compare a JB with a Super Distortion or a Tone Zone? It's going into the bridge of an Epi LP that has a Sd 59 in the neck. I want something fairly hot...
Members EADGBE
I tried a JB and a super distortion in the same guitar. The JB was regular spaced, the super distortion was F spaced. In a 1982 (all poplar?) Dean V baby the super distortion sounded slightly thin. The JB had more bass. The super distortion had a little more emphasis on the treble strings. The JB a little more emphasis on the bass strings. I wound up putting the JB in the guitar. I still love the super distortion though. It just didn't sound as good in this particular guitar. It's probably not the pickup's fault. My Dean baby is probably too light in weight. This can result in a thin tone. But when using effects the super distortion sounded better than the JB. Members Alecto
Off-hand, I'd say the JB is better for your needs because it has better cleans than the Super Distortion (listen to Jeff Beck's 'Cause We've Ended as Lovers' for proof). Dialing back the volume control on my Les Paul, I can get a fat Tele tone from the JB which is very useful for country.
Members laidback
That was very helpful. I've ordered the JB!
Members CoqBelliqueux
What about the amp?
Members laidback
Pro Reverb with a few circuit changes (bias, 3-wire, etc.) Very nice cleans, and I get my grit from pedals since I rarely get to crank the amp.

Members ashasha
I hate JB pickups. Let me say it again I HATE JB PICKUPS. Now it may be the guitar that it was in (alder body, maple neck thru), but it was the most midrangy, boring thing I've ever heard. I know that it cuts through the mix very well, but it sounded like crap to me. Members Orange Jackson
Tone Zone is a good bit more modern heavy rock sounding, and the JB is a bit more heavy metal sounding, but it for sure does rock tones too. The Tone Zone has a better sound when clean imo, a bit like a telecaster. But the JB certainly is cool if you like to play hard rock music, (make sure you set the pole piece heights to taste).
