Members flori
......when a friend (who doesn't play at all YET) invites me round to inspect the guitar he has just been given by someone on the point of binning it. No name strat copy .......but it has the sort of set-up and 'feel' that I fall asleep dreaming about!! Doh! Good for him I say! I shall be happy to restring it for him and show him a few basic pointers........ If he doesn't take to it I'm sure I can find it a home
Members Orange Jackson
I think that is a big part in just doing a set up. Knowing what 'good' feels like helps enormously when trying to pushing a guitar in that direction. It takes time to get to know that feel, and access to a well set up guitar. Members flori
No.......I was just pleasantly surprised by a guitar that might have been very hard to 'get right' turning up so playable from the brink of dumpsterdom!(And pleased for its new owner!) No ....I am not a tech by any stretch of the imagination....I have slowly learnt how to get a guitar in reasonable playing order thanks to a lot of help from the info/people on this forum...and still have a lot to learn. I teach a little 'strum-a-long' to local elementary school children and try to keep their 'no-name' strats and mile-high action acoustics in easy playing order and I don't often come across one that actually feels good to play without a lot of tweaking.I am a violinist by trade with a fair amount of experience in setting up these instruments, so some of that quest for an ideal set-up has translated across. Members BoneNut
I love working on and setting up my guitars. Polishing turds is an amazing hobby and I did for a few years. I got great satisfaction from taking a cheap guitar and making it sound and feel like a more expensive instrument. I'd even take pride in letting someone else play them and be amazed by how good they were. Now though, all my guitars are fine. They are either cheapies that I have raised to their full potential or more expensive guitars that came out of the factories needing nothing but to be played. To be honest, I was playing a lot more when I was polishing the turds... spending more money too. Now, I'm lucky if I pick up one of my guitars every other week. Now that I only need to play them, a lot of the passion has gone out of my guitar "hobby". Lately I've been thinking a lot about keeping just two electric (My Strat and Yamaha) or maybe even only one, my acoustic and one amp. Just take the other three or four and sell them off. Members jelloman
...just hope that the setup doesn't change when you re-string it...:poke:...just goes to show that junk and treasure really are not that far removed from each other...

I have a small stable of cheapies that I lavish a stupidly inordinate amount of time to and it can be a very satisfying relaxation for me after the rigors of playing the Viola all day (!).........I try to pass my enthusiasm for all things guitar on to my young students as well.I have one really 'nice' guitar (in my avatar) for when I can't be arsed to faff around with the planks .Playing electric guitar (rather haphazardly) unleashes the Br00tal part of my spirit in a way the viola doesn't!
