Members gitmo
I'm going to shield my Strat.'s PUP wells soon. I've been looking around on the Internet and saw a site that is referred to often on forums which shows one method on how to do it. The site recommends using a sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil under the pickguard and smaller pieces in the wells with a pictorial on how to do it but I didn't like the way the PUP wells were done. I did this proof of concept using a single piece of aluminum A/C ducting tape and with care should come out very neat. I show a drawing, an actual piece of aluminum tape with layout which in practice will extend to the edge of the pickguard and a piece I cut and assembled which although a sloppy prototype worked exactly as planned. Done before? Constructive comments?
Members ballhawk
As long as you use one continuous piece it will work. The problem comes when you overlap pieces. The underside does not conduct. There are ways around it which you probably found in your net search. I use the AC/duct tape but I supplement it with copper tape that has conductive adhesive when I have to connect more than one block of aluminim tape. The underside does not conduct. This will have an uncut strip across the center-not an additional piece- from one edge of the pickguard, down through the PUP well, up the other side to the other edge of the pickguard. The red centerline shows the part of the aluminum duct tape that will act as an uncut trace. The overlapping of the shielding material was the one aspect of the methods I've seen that I want to improve on.
Members Sparky Coldfire
I just did my fat strat and I was quite pleased with how much quieter it got. I used to have this problem where it would be noisy (noticeable when gain was cranked) until I touched the strings. Now it

Members Belva
The idea of making one piece to do the cavity is a good one. As few pieces as possible. Another option where pieces join together is to use small ring terminals, some thin wire (26awg is good) and some wood screws. Make jumpers to go from one piece to the next. If done carefully it won't look goofy. Your trying to make a Faraday shield. So the cavity shield and the pick-guard shield have to contact. Otherwise you're wasting your time.
