*shrugs* I thinks its kinda based on what effects your tone your most in each genre.

In rock, its not so much the amp, a lot of people just plug into whatever amp, its the tone of your guitar, that thick warm LP, or a bright stratocaster.

While in metal, a lot is determined by the amp. Your pushing it SO hard and your using such extreme distortion, that you need an amp that can really handle it, and most guitars in the end will sound pretty similar.

Indie and Alternative stuff uses a lot of background effects and little stuff to add variety to the monotony of the simple guitar, bass, and drum parts that are normally going on.

Just an observation, might explain why these groups split like they do. I personally lurk/post in all of them, cuz I'm cool that way. xD

I'm a metal head through and through. I hang in EG because of the company. WAY to many punk ass holes over in amps. Most of which know nothing about amplification but they sure know how to be a wise ass.

You can actually get help in EG. :thu:

Metal guys are the only ones that need to buy a different amp every 2-3 months. I used to do vox for a metal band and the guitarist went through TONS of amps in less than two years. Marshalls, 5150, Engl, Framus, Splawn. . . . I thought they all sounded good but he was very fickle.

Im kind of a metal guy, wouldnt say im a metal head but I do love my high gain tones... Im perfectly happy running a boss metal core through a JC-120 :idk: Ive found that SS amps are really well suited to high gain stuff and tubes never really cut it, so maybe some metal guys hear that tubes are "the {censored}" and wonder why they arent happy with them?

It makes sense.

Rock guitarists are all about their guitars, and the really iconic dudes are synonymous with particular models. Amps are important, but ask any novice guitarist and they can name you all the guitars their favorite guitarists play, and maybe a few of their amps, if they have endorsements or signature models.

On the flip side, metal guys are more into amps, especially modern metal and hardcore. A lot of the dudes are playing the same or very similar guitars (flip through a metalcore magazine and count LTD EC-1000s), and many times the same pickups (EMGs make every guitar sound the same), so the deciding factor in their sound is their amps. And when people who don't play metal have amp questions, we've learned there are other sections of the forum better suited for those answers, despite the amp forum being dedicated to amps and not a genre, because the people who post there most are.

Indie guys use a lot of pedals. The amps and guitars are often times somewhat formulaic (Fender amp/vintagey-retro-ironic guitar), so the pedals are what they discuss.

+1

Ah luvs muh metal, but the amps forum has too much juvenile behavior for my taste. As it is, those guys 'taint anywhere near as metal as the sevenstring.org, 7-string forum. But, unlike amps, the 7-string mods waste no time in slamming naughty boys and girls for their errant behavior. So, If I need my metal fix, I hang out in the 7-string forum.

The effects forum sounds OK by me, but while I like effects, I don't live for them like so many pedal heads do. I'm just as happy plugging straight into an amp, as I am using my classic Morley Flanger (bought by me brand new in 1997), or a cheap, generic chorus pedal. So, I doubt I'd be able to relate to the effects forum regulars all the time.

EG may have too much of the blooz and klassic rawk for my taste at times, but it is more of a potpourri musically, than the forums I just mentioned. Oh yeah, and people will make an effort to answer your questions. So, if I do HC, it's EG for me.
