is having exposed wood(wood without finish or paint) damaging to a guitar? im assuming no because acoustics and hollowbodies have wood without finish on the inside and that is exposed to air and moisture. guitars like these have exposed wood too...

Needn't worry about those guitars getting damaged...it's already happened!

Paint finishes are pretty permeable to moisture anyway. Like you say, acoustics (which are more delicate than solid body electrics) have lots of exposed wood on the inside.

The main reason for having a coating on the wood is so that you can keep it clean. Dirt gets into the grain of the wood if it isn't coated in some way and you can't wipe it off.

The only time you'd run into problems is if you sweat a lot. A LOT. Back in the 70s Angus Young reportedly had a couple SGs literally rot into mush from soaking up sweat every night. But in any kind of remotely normal circumstances, it's fine.

My 1980s USA Gunslinger had an unfinished all maple neck. One winter the fretboard started coming up and off of the neck. I glued it back down and then tung oiled it. I bought it used. Otherwise I would have never bought it like this. Not only can the wood warp etc. But it can also get real dirty fast. Anyway I believe the only exposed wood on a guitar should either be a rosewood or ebony fretboard. Everything else should be painted or finished in some way.

Yea, sweat can do some damage over time, even with a finish.

This one was retired to the R&R Hall of Fame.
