I really like the band Blonde Redhead, who use a vintage Japanese 6 string short scale bass. I have a ton of guitars, but with that, no money. Can i just put these short scale bass strings on a normal 6 string guitar?

No, you can't string shortscale bass strings on a guitar-length neck. They will be incredibly floppy and unplayable unless you tune them very high. They also won't fit into your tuners because they have a tapered section which starts about 34 inches from the ball end. Even 27 inches is debatably too short for tuning bass E-e, you need a 30 inch scale minimum.

I've been building a Fender VI variant on a budget - a $30 SX short-scale bass neck (30") and a jazz bass body with a Mustang tailpiece - I haven't re-routed for new pickups yet, but it strung up and intonated properly after I rebuilt the headstock and cut a new nut. The body needs to be reshaped and I have 3 Strat pickups to install with a new pickguard.

Alright gogogo, sounds like the resident expert on short scale 6 string basses has chimed in. That build thread is coolio. A 6 string short scale bass is a cool idea. I also like the SX JR jazz bass, I use one for recording and I have no desire for another bass currently. Not that it would matter if I did.lol They are pretty darned nice for a hundred bux.

Expert? The only short scale 6 string bass I've ever played is the one in the picture above! My only knowledge is based on research and talking this project over with people who REALLY know their stuff. But thanks for the compliment.

Rondo do a couple of 30" scale guitars which are your cheapest way into this kind of thing:
