SRV sig strat vs SX strat

Had a lot of fun with the SRV vs Squire bullet a while back (even though the srv didn't have a good showing in that one!).

Here is my SRV sig strat, stock texas specials (except for a treble bleed and bridge tone mod) against a floyded HSS SX strat. The SX has my first and only attempt at winding pickups in the neck and middle and new pots.

Both guitars are played through the clean channel of a fender hot rod deluxe + a 12" external speaker. Recorded in a basement w/a zoom h2.

Due to the HSS nature of the SX strat, only the neck, neck/middle and middle pickups are used. Both clips start on the neck and work towards the middle.

Please select a choice from the poll and reply with why you chose what you did. FWIW, I find the clips sound best through headphones. I'll reveal the guitars identities Sunday morning.

Good luck!

EDIT: 6/27/10 - Identities of the guitars are on this post:

I think guitar 2 is the SRV, Guitar 1 is the SX.

That said, both sound good :thu: I think that guitar 2 has an edge however on the leads and lead riffing- it seems to distort a bit nicely and sound a little fatter, on the rhythm stuff though....I think it's hard to tell the difference :)

...and I could be wrong. :idk:

I think 1 is the SX and 2 is SRV

1 sounds more vintage and not as punchy, but clearer

2 sounds fuller, more low end, and punchy leads

But this is all relative since I don't know how you wound your pickups so you really can't compare. I'm just goin with my assumption that the TS would be bigger bottom end than your pickups

That's a really good point. The pickups I wound used 42AWG wire and Alnico 5 magnets, wound to just over 6K each and magnetized fully (near as I can tell anyway). The middle pickup is RWRP. I wouldn't say they are "hot", but they are not vintage wound. They are randomly scatter wound by hand using a drill.

Thanks to everyone so far for casting a vote!

I voted guitar 1 as the SX and guitar 2 as the SRV. I just the think the second guitar has a lot more fuller and well rounded tone. I thought the first guitar was very thin and lacked a solid sound.

I was wrong last time with the bullet so I guess we will see this time.

I voted #1 as SRV, but I've never played or heard TS (to my knowledge) so I'm flying blind here. #1 has more air and, to my ears, more depth; #2 is more punchy and compressed. I like them both, and can see why you do too! Nice playing as well.

1 sounded richer on my P.C. speakers. SRV

SX is a great value, it sounded very good for a $100 guitar. I owned one and still would if they made a hardtail.

I think they have some strats, or did have some strats, w/a TOM - not my thing, just looks too weird. I like hardtail strats as well, have a '74 hardtail.

Thanks for voting!
