I'm lookin for one of those old Korean ones.
Which factory was the best? Samick?
Also where is it from if the serial has no letter in the front?

Also for dots, they made a limited run with block inlays, were those any better or just the same MIC dot you would find these days but with block inlays?

Other suggestions?

Honestly?
Forget about what factory or country they were made and when. Dot's and blocks? Mostly the same.

More than anything, more than any other type of guitar... TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. You'll find that some of these Dots and Sheratons can rival any semihollow guitar on the market but you'll also find some as resonant as the proverbial, water logged oar.

Everyone that buys from the internet insists they got lucky and got a "great" one but play a few different ones side by side and you will feel and hear the difference right away.

Well I honestly would love to try before I buy but not too much around here to try...

I understand. It's the same thing for me down here and I had to buy many. many, many guitars unseen and hope for the best. Luckily they were easily sold off when I didn't like them.

After having semihollows from every brand from Gibson to Epi and in between, I finally found a Sheraton that was wonderful and modded it to make it perfect. After years, I only found one semihollow that could replace it and that was the Yamaha SA2200 I now own. No mods needed on that one. Perfect right out of the box.

I've owned a few over the years and to be honest the new Chinese ones aren't half bad at all. About 2 years ago there was a noticeable improvement IMHO.

Buy what you want though. I wouldn't reject a good playing chinese one just because of where it was made though.

And I've played plenty of dead ass MIK guitars over the years as well. I think that there is a bit of bias and bull{censored} mixed in some of those 'magical' stories of the MIK stuff being great. There's plenty of examples of all kinds of good and crap from both countries.

And don't think that I am anti-MIK. My wife was made there and while she's falling apart slowly I still like her.

I always liked the Riviera's that Epiphone made in the 90's. Wish they still made those ones.

They still do....

Also: my teacher plays a sheraton for one of his jazz boxes. with a ncie set up, they can be very very cool guitars that have a killer look. The natural finish on it is gorgeous

played an MIC dot and an MIK sherry. the dot had a HUGE fat neck compared to the sherry.

Yeah, it's a lot chunkier. The Sheraton I've got right now is considerably smaller in profile.

One thing that I have noticed with all of the Epi semi-hollows is that a set of Gibson 57 Classics is a MAJOR improvement. The stock pickups sound like a blanket is sitting over your amp regardless of country of origin.

The Casino on the other hand sounds pretty damn good with the stock P-90's. Never needed to swap those out.
