CMS Author MikeRivers Posted August 18, 2010 CMS Author Share Posted August 18, 2010 I haven't gone through those videos. I don't, usually, if I have no information at all about what I'm about to see. Would it be too hard to write "Check out this video of Lead Belly" instead of just posting a mysterious link? But waitacottonpickinminute! Are you calling Dave Matthews and Kris Kristofferson "roots" music?
Members Jon Doe
But waitacottonpickinminute! Are you calling Dave Matthews and Kris Kristofferson "roots" music? It's the songs. The thing about roots music is that anypeoples can do it ... (Yes, even Dave Matthews and Kris Kristofferson) "Amazing Grace" is roots music ....... Members indigo_dave
Some nice music you posted. But rather than roots music, to me they're more sprouts music. Music that sprouted from the roots. Maybe it depends on your perspective. Roots to me would be from the likes of Jimmie Rogers, the Carter Family, Blind Willie Johnson, Muddy Waters and so on. If you like The Band, check out "Festival Express" - a concert documentary R&R movie of a train trip across Canada. The Band are impressive in their performances. I especially liked Rick Danko's bass work on "The Weight".

CMS Author MikeRivers Posted August 20, 2010 CMS Author Share Posted August 20, 2010 What's the point of this thread? To see what people think "roots music" is? Are we taking a poll? Will someone write up the results and publish it in the Journal of American Folklore, or maybe with the RIAA or iTunes? I've always thought the moniker "Roots Music" was kind of silly. It can be anything you want it to be, as evidenced by the examples presented here.

Members Lee Flier
Jon... I don't know if you're familiar with Peter Case (I see cooter has posted a vid of his!), but he's one of my all time favs and my band has been touring with him as his backup band. Here's a few videos of us from a show last month... just shot by someone in the audience, but you get the idea... Old Blue Car Somebody Told the Truth Banks of the River "A Million Miles Away" - Peter's hit song from when he was the frontman for early 80s power pop band the Plimsouls. Two Angels Peter's even been cool enough to have us do one of our own songs in the middle of the set, and he accompanied us on piano for this one.
