I'm jonesing for one of these babies pretty bad...

All of my other guitars are humbucker equipped. I've just always wanted a telecaster and I love the looks of this one. I was counting the piggy bank and I can swing it right now but, I'm sure the wife will not be impressed if another guitar shows up. And I don't know if I will be able to use it in my band so it will be something that I will probably just use at home.

So someone please talk me down...

What type of music do you play?

My band plays hard-ish rock/punk. No metal. That's why I'm not sure if I will be able to justify it from a "playing live" angle.

But I've been getting into chicken pickin type stuff lately. That's why the interest now.

:confused: I'm in a punk band, lead/singer and my tele is great for hard rock/punk. Don't listen to the stereotypes of what Tele's naturally go for, they do great for punk imo.

I played a gig with a friend's punk band this spring and the other guitar player used a MIA tele. I was actually pretty impressed with his tone. Other than the fact that he was picking up radio stations and all kinds of other noise.

That's probably what planted the seed.

Teles are great guitars, just be sure you know what you're getting into. Ignore the Tele-hipster hype and play a few. They sound great, but after actually playing one, the neck and body tends to turn people off.

The pros are they are solid guitars capable of great tone.

I've been kind of wanting to build up one of two or three different teles.

Black body, rear routed so no pickguard, HB-sized P90 in the neck, tele-sized HB in the bridge.

Transparent black or black burst with a black/gray/white paisley pickguard.

Pink body, pink/teal paisley pickguard.

So... sorry... I'm not here to talk you out of anything.

A. Why would you buy a guitar with two pickups when you could have one with THREE?!?

B. It has only got two knobs.

C. The headstock looks a bit 'limp' somehow.

D. I hear you can only use them for country.

E. Oh dear, that selector knob looks a bit chunky!

F. Jimmy Page swapped his for a Les Paul, 'cos they're better.

For a while I had a Fender Lite (sic) Ash Tele. I liked it a lot, but the birdseye maple neck got to me. (I wanted something with less detail.) Lovely guitar, worth watching for.

So here's my attempt to talk you down -- be patient, save your money, and grab a Lite Ash when you see one. It'll be cheaper, just as nice, and, um, you can postpone the inevitable marital discord.

New guitar? Depending on cost of said guitar =

Flowers the week before, just for the hell of it. Always tell my wife about the purchase beforehand unless it's an impulse buy. Usually a couple of pair of nice shoes for her or something like that. Why not? She likes to shop and deserves nice things too.

:thu:

Back to the Tele... definitely get one. I prefer Strats myself but have a really nice Tele too.

If you're going in a hard rock or punk sort of direction, a Tele will suit your needs just fine, but I'd point you in the direction of G&L. Their MFD Pickups are a bit fatter and modern sounding. They're not quite as twangy as a '52 reissue Tele, but they sound gorgeous under gain. Not that either guitar won't do it well - this one would just be a bit more high-output and modern sounding.

OK, here goes: If you buy a Tele, the minute you turn your back on it, it will kill your other guitars.

Does your wife like your hard rock/punk music? If not, tell her you're buying a guitar to play music she'll like. She likes chicken pickin', right? I mean, who doesn't?

That might be the best advice so far... If I tell her I'm going to start playing country she might even buy it for me.
