Travelling to Madison Wisconsin...

for a conference on Thursday, and should be able to dip out for one afternoon to view some guitar porn. What are the good shops in Madison, if anyone knows? Also, will $150 be enough to barely survive for three days, and will a jumper and jacket suffice? I remember it being chilly in mid October about 3 years ago.

I live in Iowa, not too far from Wisconsin. We're having amazing weather, so your choice of jackets should suffice. Not too terribly cold yet, but bring something warm just in case. the Midwest US is unpredictable.
$150 for three days should be more than sufficient, food-wise. Madison is a college town and food should be cheap. Lots of little pizza shops, etc.
My wife went to college in Madison and said there was an awesome guitar shop off the "beltline." It was a few years back, so she doesn't remember too much about it. Ask some of the locals, they should be able to help you!
Have a safe trip.

I went to grad school in Madison, lived there for 5 years. Great town.

There is a Guitar Center out by West Towne [sic].

There is also a pretty good shop called Madison Music on the Beltline (the motorway that girds the southern half of the city).

The other place I liked is Wisconsin Guitar Shop (or something like that) on Atwood Ave, over on the east side. They never had too much in stock, but it was an amazing place to hang out.

Honestly, I always went to Chicago for serious guitar porn-ing.

A jumper and a jacket should be fine this time of year.

$150 can be enough. Madison has some great restaurants. When I lived there, they were proud of having the highest restaurant-to-resident ratio in the US. I liked Jolly Bob's Jerk Joint (some of the best jerk food you'll have outside of Jamaica) and the Great Dane brewpub. Lots of great bars, etc. The Essen Haus is an institution. You'd be hard pressed to find that many German beers on tap anywhere else, including Germany! Maybe my favorite bar in the country. I celebrated there after defending my diss--a night I'll never forget remembering so little of ;)

There are really cheap places to eat closer to campus along State St. that serve things students like (brats, cheese curds, etc.)

I assume your conference is either at the University or at Monona Terrace, both of which are downtown. Buses go everywhere, but if you have a local friend, you can get anywhere in 10 minutes, except in rush hour, of course.

Enjoy!

I think a jumper is a T-Shirt.

Madison is a great town. Try to walk the campus if you can. The trees s/b at peak color when you arrive. Lucky you. Best looking girls anywhere are in Madision. The weather has been unseasonably warm - dress for Spring weather - you s/b fine. Not sure about the shop. I went to undergraduate in Madison - but was not a guitar player at that time.

You will love it.

I live in Madison so here's the scoop. Great weather all the way into the weekend mid to high 60's. Good n loud on university Ave out by Middleton is a nice little shop. Guitar center is on the west side. On the east side on atwood is Gitners cool little place. There are some acoustic shops around also. We don't have alot of music stores. Definitely spend some time down on Campus. Lots of women.

Mmmmmmmmm.... Essen Haus... :love::love::love:

I'll also second the recommendation for Dave's Guitar Shop. I made a pilgrimage down there this spring. I could have spent all day there. Bought my Charvel there.

Thanks for all the advice. I've been to Madison before - love the town. I didn't set out to find any guitar shops and I didn't particularly notice the beautiful women, although I do remember having a nice conversation with a young lady in the queue of a bagel shop, who seemed to like my accent.

Now, if I wasn't already married, I might be inclined to try out some kind of, err, umm, you know, ummm, Hugh Grant thing.

Sorry for confusion with jumper - yes a sweater.

If you actually have enough time, and the transportation available, it may be worth it to jump on I-90 West to La Crosse (a 90-minute or so trip), and go here:

.

It is worth it.

If you really want to see guitars then this is the place to be looking for guitars, but its a haul to get there. Otherwise, I dont find madison to be a very note worthy place to find guitars. :idk: Then again I rarely can get very far without a car.

Otherwise if your go and sit outside the liberal arts related buildings to sample the female population. Stay clear of any hard science/math buidlings. I would know as the walk to my class in the psyc building is great , but then I end up in my CS class and the shift in population demographics is sobering and sad. You can tell its a CS class when its dominated by mainly men and man looking women. Not one of the better EE/CS perks.

Oh yeah, and its unseasonably warm currently.

When I was in Ireland an Inn Keeper there offered to wash my "jumper". I had a T-Shirt on so I assumed she meant the T-Shirt - but sure - sweater works.

What did she look like? She might've been trying to pick you up!

You know, ashes hauled...jumper washed, that sort of thing! ;)
