Members ArpeggiateTHIS
Yeah, I try and avoid the amp forum. I apologise if that means I'm clogging up EG. Either way, I need a small, portable, quiet(ish) amp that is preferably tube-driven. I've found these two that seem to fit the bill, and was wondering if anybody could recommend one of them or any others? Wouldn't like to spend more than
Members docjeffrey
They are both cool. The Fender has glassy cleans at low volumes and is great for blues when you turn it up. The Vox is a lot louder and more aggressive. I have not been able to get my AC4 to sound like a Vox, but it's good for overdriven tones.
Members ArpeggiateTHIS
The Vox has a switch that turns it to 0.25/1/4 watts doesn't it? Does that help at all with volume?

Yeah, but it's still loud; however, I have not tried the 1 x 8" format, so it might be more manageable.

Members mediocreplayer
Simple. Clean and mild overdrive = Fender. IMO, if you are interested in any cleans, then avoid the ac4.

Members cratz2
Honestly, I've never truly enjoyed any of the ~5 watt, single power tube amps I've ever played including the $500 - $1000 examples. Having said that, between the Champ 600 and the 10" AC4, I'd say the Champ is warmer and the Vox is brighter. The Champ sounds tiny and the AC4 when cranked, just sounds a bit underpowered. It sounds like a much bigger amp. I'd also suggest the Champ to someone that was more interested in cleans while they both do a decent - if you like that sort of thing - natural power tube overdrive, but the AC4 is definitely a louder amp. Again, I don't like either of them and for my money, I'd MUCH rather have a Vox VT15, Fender Mustang I or something like that over the 600 or the AC4. I've previously owned a Valvetronix and it was really pretty good, wouldn't want to buy another though (it's a long story of how I jacked it in for a toneport which I despise, hence me needing a small amp now). Heard a lot of love for the new Mustangs, but I'm not thrilled by the whole "computer connectivity" thing, especially after I just got my fingers burnt on a toneport. EDIT: I'm more into cleans than overdrive, so perhaps the Champ's for me. IMO, I really need to try them out but my local shops don't have any in. Members Elias Graves
Depends on whether you want to sound like you are playing a Fender of a Vox. Decide that, and you have your answer. EG
